ARGHHHH!!

Just been out and let the bike idle for a few mins again and the reg/rec does get very hot and can only touch it for a few seconds. I am getting worried a bit now as I never felt the previous one to compare how hot it should get.

Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse I also noticed that both the oil cooler pipes are rotten and surprised they weren't leaking. One good thing though the chocolate bolts came out in one piece!:shooter:

I ended up changing to the FH012AA R/R from and R1 ( new version is the FH020AA ) - It is rated for 50A capacity so its only working at around half its capability on the Blackbird.

Works very well, hardly gets warm when working, Charges at idle and very stable charging voltage over the whole rev range.

yeah I went out and bought one of those, still have it as it appens!! :bang: cos it DON'T fit an injection bird without a shit load of alterations.

Steady on Mr A.

I find it hard to believe that Jaws would sell a reg/rec that was not suitable for the bbird. What is the model number of the Jaws supplied one Mr A. Even mosfet will get hot but should not be as hot as the shunt type. Is the reg/rec a smooth tight fit against the mounting as the frame acts as a heat sink. You have a new battery and reg/rec and the output shows the alternator is fine. I think you are worrying yourself needlessly.:-0)

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying I have been supplied with an unsuitable regulator at all. I am just unsure as to how hot it should be after running on fast idle for a few mins and I also don't want to risk damage to the new reg/rec. I don't understand why it should be getting so hot so quickly especially as the new battery has been fully charged and the genny test was satisfactory?

Does anyone know when John is back from his travels and I can give him a buzz? %$fan

Not sure exactly what years had them fitted but Yamaha chose to leave the FH012AA part number on the units so they are easy to identify.

Sounds like ianrobbo1 is the man to speak to if you decide to go this way.

What is it that stops you fitting it to an inj BB ?

I know the R/R is on the opposite side of the subframe but that should only need longer cables.

I may well be wrong, as I am surprised no one has said "IT SHOULDN'T BE GETTING THAT HOT", but me, myself personally:)-0)) I don't think THAT IT SHOULD IN ANY WAY BE GETTING THAT HOT.

I wait to stand corrected and beg humble forgiveness in advance.

Suumats wrong Shirley.

:dunno:

Spoke with God on the phone there

Ok quick update. I have just spoken to Jaws who has put my mind at rest as he says it will get get "ott, red ott" and this is normal, so cheers everyone for your input.
Now I just have to sort the dam oil cooler pipes and hey, I may even get to ride the old thing this week fl4g71

Shunt type got very hot TT

The generator produced power based on the revs and excess power was diverted into an internal shunt where it was dissipated as heat. Mosfet type reg/recs are supposed to regulate the power produced by the alternator and only draw the power required to run the bike and accessories.:-0)
