Love the yanks. Take full credit for a design that they stole from parts of an aircraft in the Smithsonian vaults. The Germans Realised what a flying wing could do with radar in 1944. The Horten brothers were given the task of creating a long range bomber that had the capability to hit the US East coast and return without refulling, the HO 229 was the answer. First flew in late '44 and was never seen again till after the war when the Russians got their hands on it.

Intersetingly this wasnt the only aircraft the germans made to hit the US. They modified a FW200 Condor and renamed it the FW300, this actually made a flight over the East coast and back in 37 hours. The next mission they planned to carry ordenance but this never happened.

Oh, and dont belive the "Invisible to Radar" bollox either, I was at Fairford the year the B2 turned up. Nearly caused an international incident over it. We "accidentally" switched on the Rapier system we had there and lit up the B2, Was a habit we got into at Honnington, used to light up the A10's and F15s cos we was bored! Needless to say, word got out and we had to shut down rather rapidly and forcibly BUT we did light up the bugger and acheive lock. Works on the 117A too!

Jeez!! Was that because it was so low and close, or are you talking about when it was still at altitude?

Civilian-wise, Concorde hands down.

Military:

1. SR-71 Blackbird
2. F117 Nighthawk
3. F-14 Tomcat
4. F-22 Raptor

Being a "yank" though, I guess I am biased. I do like the Eurofighter Typhoon though.

I think you lot are all talking about a load of pooftas planes! man8um
There have only ever been two truly great planes.
 The Sopwith Camel and the Focker Tri-plane.
Now those were real planes, the sort that took real men to fly 'em.

Ah the good old Camel eh....... what oh Biggles..........
Take off and best rate of climb at 60 MPH.... climb rate can be matched by a pigeon.... guess why it was called a "kite"....... 'cause of it's performance in wind!!
At the time it was also fitted with the latest engine monitering kit.....oil pressure monitered with glass tube which went to the engine oil system... all very.....what's the word?..... ah yes - visual!!

But at the time it was dogs danglies 'cause it was so simple to maintain and could take off/land almost anywhere.

As for the Red Baron......... snoopy rides again!!

I think you will find that the Fokker DV11 was a significantly better aeroplane than the Triplane. IMHO :yo:

Also, the SE5a had many advantages over the Camel, particularly in speed, range and overall manoeuverability. And it didnt kill as many of its pilots!

Hmm, perhaps.....

Fokker Dr.1 Triplane....
320 built
The first were delivered to Manfred von Richthofen's Jagdgeschwader I late Aug 1917.
On September 1st after brief familiarisation flight Manfred promptly went off in a/c No 102/17 and shot down an R.E.8 of No 6 Sqdn.
Not as clever as it might seem as to start with the Fokker was mistaken for the Camel...........
The camels (10 Naval Air Sqdn) got their own back on 15th Sept, when they shot down that very a/c..... being flown by Kurt Wolfe.

(Top piccie the triplane.....bottom the DV11)

Thats a matter of opinion pilots at the time thought the triplane was much more manouverable, but it was slower than the DV11.

Wish I'd been around to know at first hand Robbo (
