I am afraid you will get a lot of this sort of thing on this and many other forums.

There will also be sexist remarks and sexual innuendo sometimes humorous and sometimes not

You are free to criticise those who make the remarks and free to be offended JUST as others are allowed to make any of the above remarks as their conscience and wives allow


As an aside, ( and please feel free to check back ) I have often passed comment that it is usually those who shout racist the loudest who are the true racists.. Why ? Because they SEE a difference in race colour or creed and try to defend those they perceive need defending** where as those who really don't give a toss about racism rarely see any

** Often at the angst, humiliation and sometimes anger of those same people who the racist leaps to defend

On the wall in one of my tutors rooms was an A2 poster

During one late night drinking / tutorial / general shindig ( as was the way back in the day ) I asked him why he had the poster..

Smith, he said, it is there to remind people there is a difference between humour and racism........

He was not a psychologist but a physicist and a very wise man

He ended up leaving for Harvard where he received tenure ( actually until he died at a very ripe old age rather than the normal 'until mutual agreement'. ).. I will take a lot of what he taught me about life to the grave.. A lot of the physics, I hate to admit, have long since fallen out of my brain !

I would suggest you take a close look at your own ethics D B as you seem to be seeing hatred where there is only humour

Davey Bee does have a point. Stuff is posted on this site that would not be acceptable if spoken or written in the workplace; at best 'disciplinary' would follow, potentially with dismissal.

What some people genuinely feel is 'acceptable humour' just isn't. Someone who I don't know overly well made a passing comment about my lack of much in the way of hair at work the other day and I took a pretty dim view of that - not so much that I am folically challenged (I don't give a toss, makes life easier:-0)) but that the person felt it was OK to make the observation about me in front of others. Not quite the same as racism but the principle is there.

No doubt comments about 'pc gone mad' will follow, but I would suggest that those who take this line need to realise it is 2014 and move with the times. As a 'for instance', a white English born person is now a minority group in London. It's a fact, get over it. It's a bit like The Sun calendar` hanging on an office wall was totally acceptable when I started work in 1976 - times have moved on.

I live in a predominantly white middle class area and work in a multi-ethnic central London location - but you know what, it is only typing this that has made me realise that, and for that I am proud.

And as for spelling, I am typing this on a 10 year old laptop while in a dark bedroom so if there are errors so what.sh1tehppns I would also argue that these are keying errors rather than spelling errors as I, and others, regard my word and grammar skills as significantly above average.

John, when you have spent 40 years of your life being stopped by the police for no other reason than you're black, therefore a likely criminal, when you've been beaten in a coffee shop for the thief of an handbag the night before in a club where you wasn't in, when you watch your WHITE friends (policemen themselves at the time) feel so maddened by the racist action of someone towards you that they want to kick ten bells out of that person, yet you see it as nothing to get mad about because its part of my normal day. I could go on, then please come and talk to me about what should be regarded as racism.

I've had 57 years of overt and covert racism I think I've serve the apprenticeship, that allows me to comment.

But again, racism is based on hatred.. Actually, I would say it is based more on stupidity, ignorance,, arrogance and base sadism

I have worked and lived with so many different races, colours and creeds over the years I could not begin to list them all... indeed, why should I ? We ( as in human beings ) are all basically the same creatures.

The only time I have ever been made to feel an outcast is when I worked with a group of Scots.. ( !! Yep... really ! )

Yes, I know I have never lived in your shoes mate, and know of all the bad things.. I am just suggesting that you MAY be seeing hatred where none is meant, based on life experiences which have been extremely unpleasant.

Just like a non smoker cannot see ANY reason why a smoker is a smoker, I guess my predisposition makes it difficult for me to understand racism and why anyone leans towards such odd ideas.

My biases in life are for those that affect me.. I really dislike Hardly Movings for instance.. But unless the rider of such a machine pisses me off I would not lump him in with other Hardly riders..

I can accept I am therefore perhaps not the best person to judge, but equally, on the other hand, humour has a broad spectrum and in every branch there is someone, something or some group that is at the brunt.

As a life long geek ( school chess club and it just got worse from there ;-0)) ) I have personally been at the wrong end of jokes and a good deal of bullying yet I still try to stand back and examine a joke about such things without decrying it. ( hell, there have been whole comedy programs aimed very specifically at my, and others like me, persona's )

For me, the criteria is usually 'was there malice meant, was it personal'

If not then it gets put in the humour box

I think John has the nub of it. To me racism has to involve malice. As an Irishman I have often enjoyed "Irish" jokes but very rarely have I been the butt of malicious jokes. Inevitably they were from insecure pillocks trying to make themselves feel important. I have seen many jokes on here citing all races and creeds but I cannot bring to mind any which were malicious. I don't believe post#1 was intended to denigrate anyone so save your angst, Davey, for those who are truly racist. @tu*

Believe it not Andrew, I typically agree with an awful lot of what you write. However, one thing you are absolutely spot on about is your "pc gone mad" comment. It has gone mad. It's ridiculous and it's been spiralling out of control for years.

That in itself is plain absurd; as has already been posted, no-one mentioned black people except DB. Fact is, it's probably him that's the racist one, always looking for offence where none exists. BTW am I racist, My ex Father in law is as black as a black thing and from Jamaica, my ex wife is half cast and I hate them both with a vengeance, 4 of my children are quadroon, I'm not a fan of 2 of them, the other 2 are a bit suspect as well, I have Asian and African friends they call me all sorts of racist names, but that's what we do, I know they would stand by me, same as I've stood by them, no hassles from any of them!! or me to them :dunno: but I'd still like to see the UK with less foreign enclaves and "mini" country's springing up in big cities with more integration and acceptance of the "English" laws customs and language, but I'm not allowed to say things like that any more -(

The way I interpret DB's post is one of two ways:

Either he's black, 57 years old and from the age of 17 he spent the following 40 years being stopped, beaten and discriminated against. Alternatively, he is 57 years old and from the age of 17, witnessed persons of Afro-Caribbean origin being stopped, beaten and discriminated against for the crime of being black.

Ok, there have been some racist (and homophobic, fattist, gingerist, creedist etc) jokes on here. Somehow, I doubt any of the ones that I have read (and certainly the ones I've posted) have been written with any malice.

It's not what is said, it's the way that is said. Ok, maybe DB has had, or has witnessed, more than his fair share of racism. Somehow, I don't think that is a valid reason to tar others with the same brush and see hatred in a post where a blind man on a galloping horse can see that it was a joke.
