Major instrument failure?

Whilst riding my 96 carb bird the instrument cluster failed
all analog dials, sidestand light, neutral light, oil light and the 4 internal lights that illuminate the cluster

both indicators and the high beam light and the clock still work

I wont be able to look at it until the weekend but all sage ideas very welcome!

That happened to me when my reg/rect failed. Instead of no output I got full alternator voltage into everything. But all my bulbs also blew. Did you have your lights on at the time?

Or the printed circuit board on the back of the clocks has given up:dunno: this has been reported a few times in the past, albeit it has not been everything dying at once.

When the charging system gave up on my carb Bird (hard to believe I know8rfl@) the first indication was the HID playing up then a misfire. However, the tests are really simple (thread at top of Help details) so easy to eliminate this as the cause.

But it does sound like one of the plugs has come out (as above) or a fuse......... If it is a fuse, then the question is 'why'?

Yes my lights were on as I always ride on dipped beam,

I will try the fuses first, then the plugs on the back of the instrument panel and rectifyer if that does not work

Well, it turned out to be simply a 10 amp fuse, replaced it with a new one. Question now is will it blow again?

Thtas was exactly the problem on mine back in 2013. Break in the track that took out all instrumentation just before heading towards Monaco. Easy enough to fix once you've spotted it, just solder in a bit of wire over the break.

I knew if I kept saying "fuse" enough times, I would get it right at least once. Glad your back up and running

Until it blows again. They don't just blow for the fun of it.........

I always carried a bag of mixed fuses under my seat on the various Birds, along with three spare reg/refs an four spare generators........8rfl@

Now the hunt begins for the short!

I am tempted to put a higher rated fuse in it!

:eek: Come on Grant you know tin foil, out of a fag packet works better than that!! :dunno:

PS can I interest you in a fire extinguisher, I have one just the correct size for putting out motorbike fires!! :-0)

Back in the day, when I spent some time working on fork trucks, it was common practice to stick something real strong across a randomly blowing fuse and wait for the smoke !
Fastest way known to man to find where a short is ( but it takes a bit of nerve !! )

8rfl@ The civilised way is to disconnect everything served by the fuse and reconnect one at a time until the fuse blows. :-0)

Quite correct,, but when on a time limit per call out the quick and dirty method always wins out I am afraid !

I'd try removing the HID from the low beam and putting the stb H7 bulb in see what happens

them chinese HIDs dont go on for ever 8rfl@

Which fuse? I had the main fuse blow which was down to a reg/rec packing up (now there's a surprise8rfl@)
