Having run into a heavy rain storm and gale force winds last night on my way home from Quiney's birthday 'do' and getting completely PWT from the waist up I've decided I need to upgrade my jacket.

The Richa monsoon pants and BMW boots kept me perfectly dry in the short fat stumpy leg department. I want a guaranteed dry jacket, not too bothered about heavy armour so what do you peeps recommend?

I have a Rayven jacket it has a quilted lining, when I sold my bike I kept the jacket because it was so good and when I get my next bike I will still use it, it is warm and waterproof, as I recall it was a birthday prezzie from my wife and it was not expensive (about ?30) I was wearing it when I had my meeting with the Volvo and there is not a mark on it

Derek and i use Belstaff

He has a katsai jacket and I have a merlin. Both these are discontinued now, but neither has ever leaked. I would certainly not buy any other make now.

I have 2, one is a Hein Gericke 'Voyager' goretex type with armour,, very warm & dry. The 2nd is a FRANK THOMAS 'Aqua' which goes over the leathers, the FT is 100% waterproof,, never ever let a drop in.. The HG tends to allow water into the pockets but not inside the jacket so it depends on personal preference.

I used to have a frank Thomas Aqua but somehow lost it when we moved house, it was excellent at keeping the water out, the only problem was no pockets so when I needed to get my money I had to unzip and half strip off. also I could never fold it down into that bum bag thing.

You want dry? I give you dry! Hein Gericke Master IV... not cheap but it works. 600 miles of solidheavy bucket-load type rain on motorway, showered by lorries I was passing, not ONE dry mile... I arrived drisabone, thanks to the Gore-Tex lining.
You want safe? I give you safe! err, actually it's the same jacket... the Hiprotec is an amzingly impact-absorbant material - during my crash last year, first point of impact was my head, but second point of impact was my shoulder. Choc was violent enought to sheer the Aramide fabric... and I wasn'r even bruised on the shoulder. I also has a back protector.
And it's warm, with an inner removable jacket with ComfortTemp inserts. And it's got a neck wind protector, a lot of pockets some them fully waterproof... the only thing is the collar edge is make with fake leather which cracked all over after a year... Why don't they put genuine leather on what is an otherwise remarquable product? Anyway, as you can see, tried and tested, and warmly (w;;v) recommended

Most of the time I have the Gore-tex one piece Aerostich on. ( best armour of all my gear ) and for the really cold/wet winter I use everybody's favorite the HG Voyager zipped to their Voyager bib and brace trousers, super warm, but can't get some gloves under the cuffs.

Hey Punchy

I have the Urban 3/4 jacket by Lewis (had it on on Sunday). I had a ReVitt before that but the Lewis is a better jacket. I looked at the HG stuff but it is a little pricey, the Lewis is only ?100. It has all the usual stuff (waterproof pockets, armour, full removable lining(with sleeves unlike the FT) and a nifty inner Lycra type band that fastens really tight around your belly to keep draughts out). You can find them in M&P
Lainey has a Frank Thomas Aqua and its now looking a bit tatty after 3 seasons.

See ya later

expensive and leaked like a seive from day one. I have reproofed it several times and it is now reasonable ...........to be avoided like the plague.

I've just gone out and replaced my Frank Thomas Aqua jacket, which and this IS MY OPINION ONLY, was total and utter shite. Bugger leaked in more places that I could count and certainly wasnt thermal! Changed it twice under the FT "No Quibble exchange" and found that the other two were just as bad. Used to have FT Aqua gloves too, they was just as bad!

Anyhoo, step in Messers Hein and Gericke. Have bought one of the Tuareg jackets. Its just the basic one, cost me ?90 and is totally wind and rain proof. I cannot rate it highly enough, also makes me wonder if the basic ones this good, whats the gortex one like! I also bought some of the Tuareg gortex gloves and at ?40 an absolute bargain!

Yep....Got a HG Master and it's the bizz. Warm, doesn't leak, bought from EBay for ?120 cos the bloke bought it, wore it twice, then gave up biking.

Also try the Weise Dynastar.....not as warm as the Master but 100% waterproof.

Every bit of Frank Thomas gear I've ever bought has leaked. Maybe I've been unlucky but I reckon Frank Thomas is a lying bastid.
