Hi folks, and yes, at long last I?m home.

Sorry for the delay in replying, but this is the first time I?ve felt like, and been able to get close to the keyboard.

First off, a BIG BIG thanks to all of you who called, text, send cards ect as it was a real boost to hear off so many. Being a couple of thousand miles away from home, bust up in hospital where nobody speaks he language can be a bit, well, lonely. So it sure helped.k1ap

Well, what can I say?. How did it happen, what do I recall. This is going to be a bit long and probably boring but here goes.

We were travelling along the A136 from Biescas to Pau. We had travelled this route a few days earlier so knew the road ahead of us and knew it was in a poor condition as they were doing road works, so for once on the trip we were taking it steady. It was on top of the mountain section, it was cold and slightly damp. The road surface at this particular point was in a good state of repair as we were a couple of hundred yards from the road works.

We entered a sweepy right hander and I guess I was doing about 50 which was well off the pace for the road had it been dry.

In the apex of the bend the front wheel suddenly washed out.

The funny thing is, it didn?t feel like the front had gone down, what I remember was hearing the offside peg grinding and thinking to myself, ?kin hell, that shouldn?t be happening, I didn?t put it that far over!!? Then I realised that the rest of the bike was on the floor sliding along. I recall trying to turn the bars into the bend to try and get the front wheel to bite again, but in hindsight if it had bit it would have probably high-sided me!!.

I then saw the headlight and front wheel coming directly at me and so I pushed on the bike to get it away from me. It was obvious that the bike was spinning on the floor and I wasn?t. This was because the back wheel was still having a bite at the tarmac making it spin.

The next I recall was hearing a very loud bang followed by the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. My leg had struck the upright post of the Armco barrier and snapped. I went skidding under the Armco and came to rest on my back in a muddy puddle the other side of it.

The pain in my leg was unbearable and I head my self shouting ?MY F**KING LEG, MY F**KING LEG? over and over at the top of my voice. This helped tremendously, and if ever you?re hurt, try it!!!.

After a few moments I calmed down and lay there checking out the rest of my body, I could feel both arms were okay, my left leg felt okay and so did my back. Now I wanted to know how bad my right leg was , and was it still attached!!. I thought I could feel my right foot against my left one so, I took my helmet off, rested my head in it, and then took a look.

I could see my left leg was out straight in front of me but my right leg, which felt like it was alongside it was nowhere to be seen. I saw my right thigh was pointing in the same direction but now saw my leg, from just above the knee was at a right angle off to the right. I knew now my femur has gone and realised what this meant, bollocks!!!!

Rich and Bert joined me and told me they?d called an ambulance. I then phoned Gill to tell her the bad news. I?ve always promised Gill that If I was involved in an accident I?d call her to tell her the bad news, if someone else called her, it would be real bad!!. So lying in a muddy puddle, bust leg, pain beyond belief, freezing cold, I called my darling wife and calmly told her everything was okay.

So that about it really, ambulance arrived and shipped me off to hospital, the rest as they say is history.

There?s a couple of pics attached to show the scene and my bike, then me in hospital after they drilled my knee with a Black and Decker cordless drill with a feckin big metal splike attached which went right through my knee (honest). This was done under a ?local? and the pain was unbelievable. I puked all over the table!!!!!.:puke:

The others are when they gave me a wheel chair after the main op but took it off me as I terrorised all the old ladies on the ward, so I was reduced to walking sticks, but that didn?t stop me!!

Buzz.

Have no fear of Spanish hospitals, they are fantastic. The equipment, the staff, the nurses (oh the nurses), brill. Theres no MRSA over there, everthing is spotless. Its just the language, but working out of phrase books was half the fun.

DONT, DONT, DONT ever go abroad without insurance. My Hospital bill as 270 euros per day and I was In 10 days. Then there were the flights back, putting Gill up in a hotel, ambulances, private nurse to bring me home, so on and so on.

Theres no way I could have paid all that - so GET INSURANCE !!!!!

Welcome back dude, at least you're man enough not to blame it on your tyres! Glad you weren't injured more than that, now one piece of advice from someone who's been there and wrote the book: keep fit any part of your body you can exercise, as it'll make your recovery much better and faster

Forgot to mention

I owe two blokes a huge thank you, both of whom made the transition from accident to hospital a breeze.

Thats Bert and Rich, both of whom were bloody marvelous and stuck with me for a couple of days, making sure my bike, kit and welfare were well sorted before they left for home.

Rich even sorted out both my personal and bike insurance by delving into all my travell documents and rang the relevent companies to get things moving.

So, a BIG UP to the boys, they were great:bow: , I cant say thanks enough.

The on cost for the 2 rooms instead of one - ?50

The cost of a disc lock - ?30

The look on their faces when they realise no one bought an angle grinder in their tailpack - priceless....

For everything else there's always FB......

Funny as eck......

Welcome back home and as you say Spanish hospitals and health service are very good having spent some time on my summer hols under their care.

I agree about the insurance Allan mine cost me less than ?12 for up to 17 days from www.direct-travel.co.uk. It just isnt worth not taking it out.
