The Raleigh Chopper, the Bond Bug and Reliant Scimitar were all designed by the same man; Tom Karen, an Austrian Jew who fled his homeland as a refugee in 1939 after ‘annexation’ ( in the loosest possible terms) by the Nazis.

2270 Bond Bugs were sold, all orange except for six in white that promoted Rothmans Cigarettes and six in lime green that promoted Rose’s lime juice cordial. As you would imagine the white and green are highly collectible. Albeit as absolutely rubbish as the orange ones.

I attended the Queen’s hall motor show in Leeds when the bond bug was first introduced, as it was only a three wheeler it didn’t qualify for the show so they stuck two together back to back, I also got to sit in the needle, a drag racer owned by DLT.

Raleigh produced a drop handlebar ‘racing bike’ edition of the Chopper, the GT Sprint.

it is rumoured that a mint condition example of this rare edition of the icon sold recently for over £4000.

The Chopper was as useless as a bike as the Bond Bug was as a car.

i.e. ‘totally’.
