Hurricane Katrina

Wow, some of you folks over here really have some twisted minds. You all sure seem to concern yourselves with our country WAY too much. Your country is not exactly the acme to which all others strive to be

I know I am comming onto your own home turf here, but I think a little more compassion might be in order. Even if you do not agree with our president (as many Americans do not either); that is no reason to try and say that our citizens do not need all the help they can get-don't blame them for his actions or inactions...

I don`t think anyone here is unsympathetic to the suffering of the people affected in New Orleans or implying that they do not need urgent help.

America holds itself up as the standard bearer of all that is right and because of its wealth forces its opinions on the rest of the world by "sorting out" overseas issues - Gulf war, Iraq or failing to protect our planet - Kyoto Treaty. They are able to mobilise vast amounts of troops at huge cost to other countries...but not to another state.

The huge resources that were immediateley sent to New York on 9/11 to deal with an unexpected attack are completely at odds with the response to the "known event" that Hurricane Katrina represented.

It is nothing short of a disgrace that this has happened and I can not believe that if this had happened in The Hamptons or Marthas Vinyard which are populated by predominantly wealthy white people the response would have been much swifter.

I am

really glad that a lot of you find the terrible loss of life and suffering amusing. :dunno: and a great opputunity to show of your wit.

For christ spare a thought for the poor bastids stuck in quite litteray a shit hole, with no food or drinking water, dead bodies rotting on the streets and gangs of armed thugs running around robbing and raping.

I cannot comperhend why the fook the best equiped armed forces on the planet have not managed to evacuate most of the population to safty by now.

Just remember that with the funny weather we are having at the moment that it might just happen here in the near future. I only hope that should it happen we would be better treated, instead of sniping at GWB and Blair.

People are not sniping at GWB and Bliar. They are merely, and quite rightly criticising the inaction of the worlds most powerful man. He can not and should not expect his (lack of )action to go unnoticed or without comment.

Quite right, but I suspect that most of the delay has been caused by beauacratic wankers dotting the i s and crossing the t`s.

At the end of an unforgettable week, one broadcaster on Friday bitterly encapsulated the sense of burning shame and anger that many American citizens are feeling.

Flood victims were left virtually to their own devices for days

The only difference between the chaos of New Orleans and a Third World disaster operation, he said, was that a foreign dictator would have responded better.

It has been a profoundly shocking experience for many across this vast country who, for the large part, believe the home-spun myth about the invulnerability of the American Dream.

The party in power in Washington, is always happy to convey the impression of 50 states, moving forward together in social and economic harmony towards a bigger and better America.

That is what presidential campaigning is all about.

But what the devastating consequences of Katrina have shown - along with the response to it - is that for too long now, the fabric of this complex and overstretched country, especially in states like Louisiana and Mississippi, has been neglected and ignored.

.....Which I could sort of understand if Katrina were a surprise, such are the wheels of beaurocracy.

The National Guard and all appropriate govt agencies should have been ready to move IMMEDIATELEY given that the forecasts were issued for days beforehand. I accept that the full horror was not apparent until a couple of days after the "main event" but that really does not excuse the response. Better to scale back the effort than fail to provide any whatsoever.

I'm saying nothing on the above comments, as I intend to wait until the NEXT hurricane to strike,"as it surly will" and then see if anyone has learnt anything, :dunno:

Man is destroying the planet, how long before animals such as Tigers,Rhino's etc are extinct?
thousands of acres of Grassland are being destroyed daily for the sake of Development

Perhaps Global warming is a natural progression of the Earths cycle, as natural as Mans greed.

half a million years ago there were animals that are extinct today, who amongst us REALLY belives we wont go the same way?? there is physical record of fire/flood and other "natural" disasters, it's been happening for millions of years, and will continue for millions more!!

I refer to the above. people all over the world are suffering, (yes even in UK & USA) because of their Governments actions and inactions, What has happened in New Orleans is a terrible tragedy, what is happening in the aftermath is an abomination, if this was to happen in the Middle east, GWB and Billy Liar would be sat at a table thrashing out a rescue plan.
our leaders seem to have no problem trying to solve other country's problems but haven't got a clue how to resolve issues on their own doorsteps.

My sympathy's to all the people affected by this tragedy.
Right, now read my post again. Of course the people affected need help and bloody quickly. The point was, America is rich enough to deal with the aftermath without outside help. And just for our mate from over the pond, Blair would get the same as Bush as far as I'm concerned.c7u8 If Bush dragged his feet because the majority of those affected are poor or black he should go now.

I agree Barrie, as someone has already pointed out if it had been in one of the upper/middle class areas, would they have taken so long to respond?

Agreed, there is no way that if this had happened in Florda for example (where Jeb Bush resides) that such a lack of action would have taken place :bang:

Bush is a w4nker who doesn't give a rat's arse about anything other than his own agendas. Sad thing is by the time the election comes around again the populace will have forgotten the magnitude of this disaster - All the speeches an promises Bush made were just a half-arsed PR exercise with scant regard for the victims. I hope he burns in hell
$%3un

Worst thing is, the global community did offer assistance but Bush and his administration egotistically declined and then sat back and did nothing. Probably thousands of additional and unnecessary lives will have been lost by the time this is over.

Unfortunately, I think he's setting the office up for his brother Jeb and then Arnold Swartznegger will take the mantle (wonder what odds Ladbrokes would give).

To hazard a guess, he is present but immediately behind Bush, doubled over with his proboscis inserted firmly in the yank's rectum !! (Bush's expression supports this theory)

Don't know but i'll tke twenty quid on Swartznegger by 2015.
They seem to vote on personalities and completely forget how the last administration fecked everything up.

By personalities I mean voting for the one they dislike or mistrust least. positive policies, moral standing or environmental improvements don't seem to come into it.
Oh and most of all who'll tax them least for their Gas guzzling urban tanks.:wank:
