Thanks.. I thought that was it..

Is there anyone in leicestershire who could come and swap CDI units just to prove that this is the problem??

Don't want to start buying expensive parts just to find it wasn't that after all!!@tu*

i still think you may be looking in the wrong places .......as for the CDI to smoke like you say you had you would see it

think you need to be looking round the battery area and the reg/rec wiring
fuse box

and id stop trying to kid your self there is nothing wrong with it by keep trying to ride it hoping it will go away as till you find were that smoke come from your just doing more damage..........

as you say there was smoke YOU NEED TO FIND OUT WERE FROM

Its home again now.. will have a good look around it tomorrow to see if I can spot what was getting hot, as nothing gets hot now,

My understanding was if the reg/rectifier goes wrong it just stops charging or fry's the battery! (tell me if i'm wrong)

where this problem seems to just cut the sparks ramdomly

When we went to pick it up with the trailer it started again..

we still stuck it on the trailer, so please don't shout at me.. ;-0))

well it worked........your now listening

if the smoke had come from the CDI you would be able to see it so that is that one out

get the tail cover off and un clip were you can the wiring pulg plugs off and look for burning clean contacts were you can

with the tail fairing off you will be able to get to every thing you need

stater relay fuse box relays and the alike

but you must find the burning or problem before riding it again inless you like the repair bill going up

test the stator your find the test on here for testing the charging bit

good luck

Someone above mentioned the joint for the cable going into the reg rec from the generator - these have been known to melt before. What happens as I understand it is the reg rec starts failing and it sends the generator into warp drive so everything starts getting a tad warm. A decent place to start your search.

If this is the problem then new reg rec, generator and battery will be sensible. JAWS is the man for the parts. All very straightforward to replace.

If you have a trailer then Thetford isn't too far away for JAWS to run his fairy dust over everything - not sure if he is back from Spain yet??

Unfortunately its not a proper bike trailer, and it was a very nervy 12 miles home... so I wouldn't like to go any distance with it..

I'm gonna strip the back end off tomorrow, and have a good poke around.

OK.. Burnt stuff found.... I'm trying to find out how to post a photo just to make sure I buy the right bit (but not having much luck)

I think it is the reg/rectifier that has had issues..

I told you thats what it was all along.... ahem! ;-0))

Cheeky sod :-0)

It is a brand new battery, it was its first trip out..

I'll look up how to test the stator.

yes that may be so but if that's what's been smoking it could of been over charging the battery

lift the battery out (right out) and see if the sides of the battery have gone all wobbly

test the power out the battery with it disconnected should be round 12.6V

so, to recap, and since I've been a member here, in a nutshell, bird problems is order of likelihood :

Got a carb bird with an issue? = it'll be the reg/rec 99% of the time

Got an Efi bird with an issue? = it'll be the loom fix 99% of the time

Got a noisy engine? (carb or Efi) it's the CCT 99% of the time

Got a funny wobble at the front (either model) then it's that top box or rack you fitted 99% of the time.

any other faults on either model, the other 1%.

big soft, not so cuddly
What about the red block that sits on the starter relay melting, happen to me yesterday , sat at the side of the road with bike in bits until i got to this bit, needed a screw driver to prize the bits off the start solenoid and reconnected to get the bike going.

Plus 1 on that one, I think it's a Honda thing tbh, I had meltdowns previously on both a CBR600f and a Varadero thou - flipping nitemare!
