HEAD ON COLLISION

Did anyone see Top Gear on Men & Motors (I think), yesterday? It was probably a repeat.... like most of the things on Sky.

Two of the chaps had a Volvo and a BMW rigged up to be driven by remote control. The two cars were then driven at each other around 60 mph.

Firkin frightening results that really make you think. Both cars were completely wrecked and had anyone really been in the drivers' seats, they would have been splodges and mince meat.

I went for a ride yesterday and rarely went below 60 mph. Overtakes were plentlyful and when I consider that I was sometime overtaking vehicles IN THE FACE OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC, (on wide roads), any of the vehicles following the lead car coming towards me could have pulled out without looking!

If 2 x 60 mph can do that damage to the cars what would my lilleywhite skin have looked like? Put you off jam butties for a while I'd say.

Rather than speed cameras, in a true effort to reduce accident statistics, the ruler's of this land should show more adverts on TV that have the same impact as that shown yesterday on Top Gear.

Doesn't work. They have tried that a number of times here in Oz and have another shock ad on at present. People are shocked for a few months then they just get used to it.

The road toll has not reduced so basically it's a waste of taxpayers hard earned. The federal government in recent weeks has decided that driver training for newbies is the way to go. People in the know have been trying for 20 years to have compulsary driver training introduced in this country and all of a sudden the pollies come up with this great idea. :bang:

Motorcyclists have had to do compulsary training to get their licence for years but if you drive a cage who cares whether you can handle it or not. 8l1nd

Well said...although its a pity that they have been closing down all the tracks that the 'p' platers could have practised on - there aren't many left in Qld. :bang:

A few years back we were called to a RTA on the M5 where a Peugeot 205GT crossed from the north bound carrigeway hitting another car on the southbound carrigeway   The driver said she was doing 85mph and the other driver 70mph. The driver of the 205GT was trapped for over an hour due to the whole car being wrapped around her like a blanket but we got her out with little more than a cut thigh and was released from hospital late the same day  I think the other driver was in hospital for a week.

I can't believe how lucky the drivers were!

The problem is that people ALWAYS think - "it won't happen to me". :violin:

In western developed nations, driving a cage is seen as a RIGHT, not a PRIVELEGE....:bang:

Therein lies the root of the problem....

Merry Xmas
Watch out for cages...

Driving

When I was at BT I had a big argument one day over the "right" to drive. I said that there should be compulsory eye tests for everyone, say every five years. I was shot down in flames! The other lad's opinion's were that it was a person's right to drive and up to the Police to prove that that person wasn't fit to drive! Bit of a F*** you attitude!

On the subject of eyesight, my daughters ex boyfriend has just passed his medical for firearms squad in the west yorkshire police, yet he has a condition called keratakona (not her that was married to him from westlife) which means he is almost blind in one eye

I agree with you here, but I also just remembered that the Qld State Government just did away (in the last few months) with the eye test for licences. :bang: :bang: :bang: Their reason for this was that 'it was not a significant cause of accidents'...feckin idiots...

I am of the opinion that anyone who needs glasses for any purpose should be subject to an eyesight test every couple of years to make sure they are either safe to drive or the visual aid needs improvement and after you get to a certain age, say 60yrs old for example you should have compulsary eye tests.

I remember my grandad was still driving well into his 80,s and he used to drive from point A to Point B each day to see his daughter and complained that there was never anywhere to stop to but a paper of flowers etc, what he didnt see is a massive Asda that had been on his route for 5 years !! he must have had the vision of someone using toilet roll tubes for specs.

Scary or what, but how many people are like that out there in this aging population.

i have to have a yearly eyesight test to keep my inspection qualification valid.

the bloke comes round my work with a chart with various words printed not in any kind of order so its harder to read and a few colour blindness charts.

dunno why the colour blindness charts though cos the magnetic particle inspection kits use white paint and black inks and the dye penetrant kits use red inks and white developers so if you can see black against white or red against white the cracks are easily spotted.

but i can drive a car or bike and could be as blind as an owl at 6 inches and nobody would know until i run into them 8l1nd

oops forgot about UV but hardly ever use that ........... mainly black and white

only qual to SNT II cos the company wont pay for level 3 as level 2 is enough for the job. oh yeah and of course level 2 means im only qualified to work for them to their procedures and would have to resit if i leave and go work for another company
tried to blag a course on U/T or even bombing at PCN level 2 so i could go work anywhere but they werent having that :bang:

Have you got any idea how much of you would be left if a very small piece of ice came off of a plane and hit you ?

Or, on a brighter note, how much your life would change if you won the lotto ?

Whilst your riding at least you have control over what you are oing.. other events can have just as catastrophic effect and you have no control over them at all..

if you feel that riding is really not a safe option then for gawd sake sell the bike now before you really are another statistic ..
Riding round looking for an accident is a sure way to find one. !

I have been involved in MANY MANY planned head on collisions in my 'banger racing' career. It was not uncommon to be flat out in 2nd gear in a 2ltr Cortina or 3 litre Granada heading straight for someone else doing the same, very entertaining for the spectators but a little tiring on the neck muscles.
I have been cut out of a few mangled wrecks which, had it been a standard road car, would have left me dead......
Internal trauma is a major killer in the aftermath of head on collisions so we used to wear padding around the waist, chest lower back to cushion the impact slower than that of a tight harness. This is one pic of a car which completed and won a 15 lap race, the car was mint prior to going out on the track but i managed within 15 laps to render it pretty much un-identifiable.
