Fuel consumption

Another factor ! when calculating MPG

Hi guys

If you are using the bikes odometer to calculate fuel consumption, its worse than you think, as the speedo reads circa 8% fast, thus odometer over reads by 8%. So subtract 8% from your readings to get accurate MPG. You can rely on Sat Nav readings if you have one. For those who wish you can correct and recalibrate your speedo using heal tech version 4 sold on e-bay usa site to get it spot on.

This is probably an item that Jaws should add to his reopetoir

not a critism, but are you "covering" the back brake ?? you may just be touching it and putting it on!! and is the bike reasonably easy to push about as the pads may be rubbing the discs, so your engine is working against the brakes without you realising!! :dunno:

Mine was ok if I pootled about but what is the point in that? I may as well have had a scooter. I sold mine because it was heavy on fuel and to take two heavy bikes out (my missus has a 1200 bandit) was just too much. If she would have ridden the bird I would probably have kept it, but she didn't like it. You don't really buy a hyperbike and worry about the consumption but these days of ludicrous fuel prices is making it a lot more noticeable.

Brim the tank, ride about 50 miles then brim it again and see how much you have used. It's the only safe accurate way of measuring as running dry is not a good idea.

165 max until the reserve light starts flashing (EFI) - usually on pillion (wife) accompanied run.

125 ish solo - I like to use what the engine has to offer - about the same when junior is pillion & wants an adrenalin rush !

MPG

I'm getting 33 miles to the gallon on my 15 mile ride to and from work. I have fuel exhausts without baffles and I regularly take it between 8 and 9000 revs on that journey. I still feel it's using too much fuel, the air filter is over a year old so I may change that. It's a 99' FI with 57,000 on the clock.

Is a lunp
sad person that i am i worked out this weeks fuel usage

i do 5 miles per day to and from work, and it works out at 42.4mpg. 1996 carb, 18t front sprocket, in the 5 miles i use/go around 19 roundabouts, have 11 straights long enough to hit 120 it wanted. and sometimes do indeed have to stop and put a foot on the ground but only about 2-3 times in both trips.

Hate to say it but I calculated what the F800GS was drinking last week and it was 79mpg !!
:violin:

 @tu* thats a good advert for getting an 800gs. What do ya reckon of the bike now you have had it a while?
I filled mine to the brim with 20.4 litres this afternoon and the bike had done 201.6 miles

I'm luvin it the more I ride it, fitted a few extras (like ya do!) and now it sounds as good as it looks, with the HID lights as well everyone moves to one side when filtering.

I will always use the Blacky for 2 up touring and the odd blast but for an everyday workhorse the GS is brill !

Looks good Russ, but would look better with one of those mesh headlight guards....

1998 Carbed with 60k on the clock and I've always got 130 from a tank when the light comes on, and generally have to put 18.something litres in to fill it back up.

When my mate was using it, and he rides in a MUCH more 'spirited' manor than I do, he also got 130 miles when the light came on.

Anyway, I've recently changed oil, oil filter, air filter and sparkies and still get the same so I thought I'd try dumbing it down a little, I've been riding lower in the revs and keeping it around 2k mark, 30mph in fourth, 40 mph in 6th and easing the speed up instead of knocking down the gears to get a good shove off to get up to speed and got it up to 160 a tank.

So every 5th or 6th tank is now free. @tu*

You loose a lot of engine breaking, even keeping your distance from whatever is infront of you I have to use the brakes alot more now.

Kind of sounds like your now riding it like you'd drive an old diesel car, might as well get a cb500 if its that much of an issue.
Personally I never bother working mpg out, always reckoned if I can't afford to fill the tank thats when I'll stop riding. Mind you it feels like that date is getting closer. I like the sound of the 79mpg Russ is getting from his wee GS, but doubt I'd get close to that out on the open road where I do most of my riding. Maybe I should do a mpg test just to compare my Bird with my R850GS, pretty sure the GS is a bit better, but it won't be by much as it takes a fair ragging to keep it moving.:-0)

Yeah, driving it like my Land Rover @tu*

Still having fun on it though. Just been an experiment to see what I could get out of it.

Went to Wales on Sunday and kept riding like that when riding as normal through towns and stuff but then back down a gear or two for the fun stuff. Was interested to see if I could hit the magic 200 mark.

I suppose it depends on if people are talking about 200 miles until the lights comes on or 200 miles out of the full tank, because 160 when the light comes on would get to 200 on the full tank.
