Fuel consumption

Far canal!!!

I've put over ?36 in the bike since yesterday! I thought (hoped) that perhaps the fuel gauge is pessimistic, but it's showing empty after only 110 miles (twice) and taking over ?18 (twice) to fill up. On both occasions it took just over 16 litres of fuel and it only holds 22 litres.

What's the fucking dealio!??

I haven't been abusing the power, apart from a couple of brief blasts. I generally ride very smoothly - just ride its massive wave of creamy torque.

The exhausts are standard and haven't been drilled, I believe the air filter is standard and the tyres are at their correct pressures. I can only assume that a previous owner has had the carbs jetted for a noisy zorst and didn't bother putting 'em back to standard when he fucked it off.

What fuel mileage are you lot getting?

I get around 120 before the light comes on, that is when not hammering it.

I've not had the light come on yet. I thought maybe it was broken - in fact, I'm just this very minute looking through the Haynes Manual on where its connectors are located so I can check it.

Both times I filled up were before 120 miles, so perhaps I'm just worrying. Thanks mate @tu*

Mine has recently had a dynojet kit fitted to suit my exhaust (which was making it rich at the bottom end) so it may improve a little, although economy is not a prime consideration for me at the moment.

I think the light does not come on till 3 liters are left.
The gauge is very inaccurate, on my bikes both carb, it does not move till 100 miles are gone. from there they both plummet differently. carb bike has 22 liter tank I think the inj is different. One of my bikes the light does not come on till about 180 miles the other at about 160, so there is about 3 liters still of fuel left still, providing the light works. Which 1 of my birds did not till I replaced the sender in the tank.
At 120 miles my guages on both have only just started to drop.

Do you weigh about 50 stone?

I'm no Einstein but it looks like you are getting about 32mpg Badseeds.

My 99 FI usually gets 40 - 48mpg.

It seems a little low if you're riding sensibly to get 110miles from 16L. That's a calculated range of only 150miles.

I've found the consumption does vary massively on how you're riding it.

Worst I've had is 32mpg and best is over 45mpg. Thats a range of 169 miles upto 240 miles. I've found mine eats fuel if under revved (which I discovered when trying to save fuel on a few trips!) i.e. it preffers the engine to have a good spin going... and then it eats fuel if you're doing high speeds (100+).

p.s. If you want to keep a track on your consumption then click on the mpg figure in my signature and it makes it really easy to do so.

My carb bird usually has the light come on after approx 130-160 miles.
The bike does get opened up a fair bit wehn its being used.

My bird has been dynojetted, has a K&N and race cans.

For the light to come on I have to be below the last segment on the fuel guage!

Then again, I get around 60 out of a tank when I do trackdays on my ZX6r, and thats the expensive superunleaded!

on a run (carbed one, different cans) 200 - 230
Normal use 150 - 160 to light on, 180- 190 fill ups to be safe.
track use 130 - 140 light on approx 160-170 before fill up.

Not ridden particularly gently, but not supergod territory like some of the red riders.

Urm I think mines running a little rich as I get 28 mpg around town less on occaision.
Ive had to push it to a petrol station at 119 miles black one with dynojet kit micron cans and k&n filter.
on the open road may get 130 od to a tank

My carb'd one did 130 miles two up at 80 on 11 ltrs the best I got. (53-54mpg). Micron race cans, dynojet and K&N filter 144bhp on the dyno!
My 2000 injection did 46 mpg on the same run two up. All standard
Will let you know how this one does when I get to do the same run again.

My old black carb Bird would do 10 miles to the litre, current injection a little less. I am an old fart who only goes past 6000 RPM when I hear the voices though.

Only way to nail this is to fill up a can and bungee on the back and run until dry.

by the way, the low level light never ever worked on my carb Bird - never did figure it out as the LED worked when I checked it out of the housing. There is a 'check; in Haynes that should tell you if it is wiring, LED or sender. Didn't work for me though.

My '98 always gets in the range of 145-165 miles before light decides to come on.
And im always usually two up and the bird is bog standard.

Mostly urban riding gives me 150 miles before the light comes on as it did this morning on the way to work. I'm expecting more mpg on a decent motorway run.
