Apparently we had a splendid and freak display of the Norther Lights down here around midnight last night.. I looked out the window around 2:30am and all I could see was black and stars. Typical.

In most cases in the UK you'll not see the full effect of the Aurora with the naked eye, unless it's particularly strong. Last night was exceptional.

You do see it quite well up here but for best results whip out your phone and set your camera settings to night mode then you'll see it fairly well, although photos tend to really show the full effect.

You need to blag a lift with Malone the next time he heads up Scandinavia way.

Apparently it is due to a massive solar flare and was very visible in many countries.

’experts’ predict it may be visible again for the next two nights.

One of the few benefits of insomnia i Suppose.

I was in the back garden just before midnight to view it. Round here it normally appears towards the north, so I propped myself against the house wall and gazed expectantly.
After about half an hour I was feeling a bit underwhelmed by the display and I was just about to head in when I looked directly above and there it was in all its glory.
I even woke the memsahib (dangerous, I know) to come out and watch.
