Pride of Bilbao is a long crossing Murt, 34 hrs I think the last time I did it (two nights on board), but I like it on there. There's plenty to do, bit of cabaret style entertainment in the evening if that's yer bag.... and the food on there is great!

The Brittany Ferries ship 'Pont-Aven' to Santander is a much quicker vessel, crossing in about 21 hours - one night on board - but is very dull on board compared to the P of B imo, ie, the entertainment was dreadful and there was no atmosphere.... it reminded me of a channel crossing to Calais, all rushed and impersonal and the food was awful.

Having done both, if there was the time available, I would choose the P of B every time.

You're right about cost. Either is expensive. Last summer's return on the Pont-Aven for me + bike was ?331

Just as a counter to R2's comments, we used the Pont Aven to go to Santander, and was very happy with the much shorter trip.

By the time you have got on board, washed and changed into some more relaxing gear, had a trough to eat, sink a few beers and then retired for an early night, wake up fer breakfast, get changed into riding gear and hey presto... you're there. Not really a huge amount of time to kill on board, if its nice watch the sun go down on the upper decks with a beer or 2 in yer mitt.

Bike + 2 people in an inside cabin, last year... ?256

bollocks to 30+ hours floating in a tin can.

Oi Rolfy, w;;v if you even think about going past our front door on that Esjberg leg without calling in for a coffee, then Andrea will hunt you down and beat you with a big stick! :t

That would be great but I have a feeling we will be arriving Barcelona on 11th mid to late afternoon.

We leave UK 9th 12.00am ferry from Portsmouth to Caen arrive 7.30 on 10th , then 7 hours down to Limoges, stopping over just outside Limoges, leaving Am 11th down to Barcelona, but if you want to swap Moibys no problem.

Hi Tank..
Can you contact me by PM or email.. we need to know where your staying so we can get a B&B for the night..plus we can swap phone numbers..

Cheers Paul

Yep it is a long crossing I have only done it once and got scurvy and bored shitless. Two nights and one day out and two days and one day back. The food was expensive and the caberet was the same on both trips.

For what its worth I would blat my way down more fun get a b&b and even a new set of rubbers and it will still be cheeper than the boat. I am however thinking about the plymouth ferry its only about 150 miles from where i live doing the mountains and riding back through france and getting a short ferry crossing home.Have fun whatever you decide thats the main thing:yo:

Time of the year

A quick read up of this thread got me thinking and a bit of net surfing followed.
The end of March prices don't seem too bad on Plymouth to Santander, would that be because it could well be a rough sea ?

I've got two weeks holidays coming up sooner rather than later, and don't fancy biking in this country at this time of year. Maybe a day or two in the UK and over to France on the chunnel, the rest of the time down in Spain then ferry back from Santander. That seems like a good plan with no real destinations, just riding in warmth for the hell of it :p .

The Mrs seems OK with it as the kids will be in school and I would be bored at home, and go out and find work just to stop me going mad with nowt to do.It's a case of holidays being used up or lost :xm

Steve, i've done this trip over 8 times now and by far the best way is 'Brittany Ferries' Plymouth - Santander. It now a faster trip of 18 hrs and most relaxing. We went through Soria a couple of years ago and the scenery is fantastic.

This year i'm having a change and going by rail to Calais (so far) and through LeMans, down to Andorra and over to Cambrills nr Salou ... Roof down and get some rays on my balding bit. :yo:
