The Guy Martin context…..he picked a car that was clearly designed as a short range runaround at the cheap end of the market, the sort of thing you would nip down to the shops in, then, having studied the map carefully, chose to drive from Lincolnshire to John O’Groats (not sure how far that is - 300 miles?) knowing that charging points in Scotland, and the North East of Scotland in particular, were way below the National average. The conclusion he came to was that EVs were useless.

If he had driven a more appropriate car like. a Tesla to London the result would have been different but, I suspect, not match his agenda.

What I find odd is that to me it appears the "ingredients" to make batteries are in much shorter supply than the other "fossil" fuels.

So how can they possibly be any sort of a solution?

Are the components of the batteries recyclable in the sense that you can make new batteries from them?

By far the biggest producer of cobalt is the Democratic Republic of Congo where working conditions are terrible, hours are long and wages are less than you would spend on a pint, they produce roughly 60% of the worlds supply although small deposits are found elsewhere in the world mining it economically for enough profit is difficult due to the better wages and working conditions demanded by more developed nations

Many other countries take the raw material and refine it which involves transporting it in some cases thousands of miles by sea with all the associated fuel and environmental costs again adding to the carbon footprint of supposedly "green" EV's something which people like that sour faced little bitch who's name I cant bring myself to type happily ignore because it does not fit their agenda

Re the burning of EV fuel,cells - when I was running lpg for about seven years three or four people commented how dangerous they were. It is easy to forget that a fuel tank is an explosion waiting to happen, in the same way that lpg tanks were ……and EV batteries burn like crazy. There are risks to all of them.

Another point is that fossil fuel is expected to be a finite resource so an alternative is needed. Whether that will ultimately be EV is anyones guess, but EV is the only credible option that has been developed sufficiently at the moment. One thing that is overlooked in the fossil fuel v EV debate is that fossil fuel supply comes from a very limited number of countries that control the market, generally to the detriment of the rest of the world……EV will help level out that economic imbalance.

As I think I said earlier in this thread, cost and at present inadequate infrastructure at the moment are all that is putting me off.

In the meantime there is a very nice BMW 650ci Coupe on an auction site that I have got my eye on, complete with V8….

I largely agree with you but dont forget that some of the materials to make EV's are also a finite resource as ably pointed out by Duck n Dive
