What’s the problem with ID cards? I had to carry mine at all times when I lived in Singapore, which was never a problem as I never went anywhere without my wallet. They’d certainly weed out illegal immigrants.
The same problem I always had with them, they are a pointless waste of money, and that cost gets passed on to the public, if any official wants to check your id they can easily and always could

And ... enforcing what was an unpopular idea that smacks of a totalitarian state with shades of 1984, as proud and relatively free Englishman it goes against everything I was bought up to believe in

Even if it means weeding out illegals? I take your point but it's a price I'd pay to get rid of foreigners here for scrounging and worse.

I half way agree with you if it would work but unfortunately it wouldn't work simply because there isn't the funding available to police it and if there were we wouldn't actually need id cards anyway

That’s fair enough. I carried one for almost six years and had no issues. Saying that, it was in a place where there were very few, if any illegals, and people behaved. In other words, exactly where I.D. cards weren’t needed.
