Just been reading an interesting snippet from someone involved at the time.
It arose as part of a discussion about how military aircraft identify themselves in international and national airspace particularly when on offensive operations.
They may well be going to wake up the bad guys but they still have to maintain separation from civil air traffic. Sometimes a fairly nondescript callsign is used.
The story goes that in 2011 a flight of RAF chaps were called by Tripoli ATC with "Tripoli does not have your flight plan"
The reply was "the reason for that will become obvious soon, Tornado lead out".
