Charging issue

Bike isn't charging, getting 16- 60+v ac from each of the pairs from gen but there is no resistance between each of the pairs but manual says they should be 0.22 to 0.26, getting 0.02 ohms but that's same as touching probs together.

I'll be ordering a new gen but wondering what's gone wrong, usually have had a voltage drop on one of the pairs before.

Don't rush in Bishbosh.

Almost certainly you do not have a meter capable of measuring low resistance accurately. What is the AC voltage across the pairs at 3000 rpm? If it is in the region of 26v and crucially each pair is showing near enough the same voltage then the problem is not the alternator. What volts DC are you getting across the battery at 3000rpm? Jaws has a post on here telling you how to check your charging. I'll see if I can find it. :-0)

I'm not back home at moment but not getting any charge back at the battery, so 12.3 DC and drops to 12 if put lights on; applying revs only drops the volts too.

I know you can't completely rely on testers to be accurate, but it gives reasonable readings to fault find PCB errors so I am suspicious having continuity between pairs when should have some resistance.

I will do some more checks when I get back

I'll watch this space, Bishbosh. @tu* If your meter cost less than £500 it will be useless at checking coil winding resistance. Your meter is in parallel with the windings when checking the resistance and needs to have a massive internal resistance so as not to affect the reading.

Well here is what I've found.

- no continuity between each wire from gen and earth.
- all three pairs 31v @ 2000rpm +/- 0.2
- one pair approx 85v @ 5000rpm
- same pair 100+v when blipped.

Using a Hilka 90030064 multimeter if that helps.

So are those figures normal, seems high to me.

All three pairs at 31v is good, Bishbosh.

Forget resistance readings and forget the blipping. With good inputs to the reg/rec but no output your reg/rec is shagged. Andybird would tell you to replace alt, reg/rec and battery but he is very rich! :-0) I would physically check all the cabling from the alternator to ensure there are no shorts to earth or burning etc. If that all looks good then it is defo the reg/rec IMHO. Give Jaws a ring and seek his opinion. :-0)

I will defer to greater wisdom but last charging problem I had the voltage output I had on all three pairs was consistent but the generator was leaking to earth ............ so it could still be the generator?

Does lightning strike twice, Andy? :-0) It is highly unusual to have consistent voltages if there is an earth leakage so I would not bet on it being that. If it walks like duck and quacks like a duck it USUALLY is a duck! :-0)

Well with no connectivity between the gen and earth and consistent voltages don't think there is a leak.

fyi - battery is new as bike had been standing for a couple of years and wasn't firing even with starter pack so prob down on amps; New battery did the business after a time. After which I was getting 14+ volts across battery with bike running but can't remember exact figures.

So looking like a RegRec problem

All been covered by above and you have done the correct checks.. I would bet dollars to donuts its the reg rec

Did you check to see if there was a measurable AC voltage between an earth and the three yellow wires ?

They should all read zero volts..

I read it that you had done this check but now unsure if I read it right ?

The static test between each yellow and earth showed infinite resistance, how are you checking AC, is that with the bike running?

Yes, the AC would be checked with the engine running. There should be 26-30v ac between each set of yellow wires at about 2000rpm but no voltage should be seen between any of the yellow wires and earth.
