Stew you must be the thiinest fatboy around and only weigh about 4 stone cause there's no way I can get anywhere near 200 to a tank outta mine (and thats brimmed) even riding sensibly:dunno:. Have you got a Power Commander fitted? Been told they improve mpg (Apologies for going off topic a bit)
No mate, no power commander that I know of! Unless the first owner stuck one on, but he only used it for touring with the wife or kid and only did 8k in 6 years....

Its a bit sad I suppose, but I usually try an work out the mpg when I fill up, (on the side stand so though the gauge reads full I'm told you can get more in if you fill up on the centre stand) and reset the trip then work it out later...and its usually in the mid 40's. Worse two up of course. Reserve light normally comes on at about 155 - 160, and I ran out recently at 199, but was a couple of litres short of a full tank before I started.

I know owners of carb'd bikes that get the light on at 130 or less. And I do ride pretty quick, if I meet another biker on the road its usually me that overtakes rather than being overtaken.

Maybe I just got lucky and have a good bike?

The other issuse (not having ridden one) was how it was around corners?
I guess you could say it's Flickability as it does LOOK quite a large machine.
HI mate, IMHO the bird handles really well, full stop. I have only been riding for about 18 months now, so have much to learn, but have ridden about 13,000 miles in that time and owned - Triumph Trophy 1200, Ducati ST2, Kawak ZX636-R, and now the bird.

The bird is obviously heavier than, say a sports 600 but personally I find the extra weight a real bonus in the stability stakes. I suppose you do have to be a bit firmer than you would woth lighter machines, but it corners as fast as I dare go! With decent Avons on, I have never encountered any 'understeer' that some of my mates complain about on other bikes.

In a mag road test I read a while back the bike was quicker in real terms that the VFR, Sprint 1050 and a Beemer - it may not be the very quickest round EVERY bend, but the power makes up for it on the straights, you will pull away from almost anything (busa, ZX12-R excepted of couse)

In group ridng on real English A and B road, I have never struggled to keep up with GSX-R,'s Ninja's etc, they may go round a certain bend a few mph quicker but after few bends will be a strraight and then you have made up any ground lost.

I have tried to practice 'Counter Steering' which I think works well on the bird, but only really do that when I want to press on - normal speeds (car speeds + about 20 / 30 more) the bike just flows without the needs to actively counter steer.

End of the day you need a good test ride, lots or different types of road, for a couple of hours if you can and try it for yourself! There is not any other bike made today I would rather have instead of the bird (some I would like as well as, but thats another story!)

You are counter-steering all the time whether you are making a conscious effort to do so or not. Try leaving go the bars  and turning the bike!!! A slight change of direction can be made by moving weight but we all counter-steer all the time instinctively. I read of a "race school" who have a bike rigged up with false bars to prove we are always counter steering. Except possibly at a walking pace! h1d1ng2

True, I have heard people say that we all counter steer without realising, but you can of course do it in a more aggressive / pronounced way to accenuate the effect. Would not claim to know too much about the science behiind it, but when you actively do it the difference is noticable!

Ps what FBS?
