Hi,

Yes it will rev freely in neutral, I actually tried that exact thing today whilst out.

The float heights were checked and all at 13.5mm.

Hi,

In no particular order I would now check :

1. Fuel tank breather blocked
2. Fuel tap diaphragm assembled wrong
3. Blocked fuel filter
4. Carb air bleed holes blocked
5. Has some muppet drilled the slide piston to make it rise faster
6. Are you sure the carbs are fully seated and that the rubbers have not split.

Fuel tank breather clear

Diaphragm been apart a couple of times and time spent checking on its assembly and condition so pretty sure fitted correctly.

The in tank fuel filter is clean as a whistle and no others fitted.

The air bleed holes I have not checked, so will do that and let you know

I'm pretty sure the air pistons are as they should be. To be sure, where would they be drilled?

I never had the carbs off until a a week ago and they seemed to be seated fine but when putting them back on I used slight lubrication, pushed them on and gently used my rubber mallet to tap into place so I'm pretty sure they're sitting comfortably. I inspected the rubbers and no splits.

Coils should be here today or tomorrow so will check other items when I fit them as tank will be off again.

I do really appreciate your help, thank you

I don't know as much as CBRD obviously sounds like he does but when I bought mine, whilst it seemed to run ok (bearing in mind I was still wary of letting it fly) I came to the conclusion that my carbs had been tampered with and probably Dyno jetted.
My main problem was fuel consumption, I was only getting 7m/litre. This also showed itself by 'sooting up' the rear face of the exhaust pipe.

As I had read that as part of the Dyno jetting process involved drilling something, then that was probably irreversible, I bought a second hand set off fleabay. Instantly 8.5m/litre.

You put your location down as UK, is there nobody local that you could coerce into letting you try theirs on yours for an hour?

Ok excellent I shall remove one and check. I found a conversation table so it suggests a drilled out hole #37 would be 2.6416 mm although the link you gave me suggests that some are the correct size for dynojet from stock.

They like things to be confusing that is for sure.

Coils have just arrived so hopefully I will have time later today to fit and try these too.

I have a new full time job with my bird bless her.

Thank you for your reply,

I will check the hole size and see and a second hand doner might be worth a purchase (so long as they haven't been attacked) especially as each one new from Honda is ?170 x4 !!!!!!! I have been getting around 8 to 8.5 mpl as an average and it is used for enthusiastic enjoyment the majority of the time.

I don't know anyone with a carb model unfortunately.

***Managed (by waiting) to pick mine up for about £80 for the full set. Best £80 I've spent on the bike.

***Luckily I think you will find the ones that have been tampered with are in the minority. The BIRD is fast enough for most people.

***I wouldn't use it as a doner, I'd just stick them on and see how they go.

So we have an update.

I have checked the bleed holes and they are fine.

I have measured the holes in the slide piston and it is approximately 1.6mm so I believe them to be untouched.

New coils and leads on and an old set of plugs placed in, but old plugs had a superb colour so they are find too.

Went for a ride and it has improved a lot. It is now like it was 2 years ago with an intermittent single jerk at again the 6250 revs in top gear. Approximately 1 in 6 times.

So I came home and wired the side stand switch up so it had continuity permanently and went back out, no change so that's back to being plugged in.

I'm still thinking electrical but could still be fuel related. I think I'm running out of options.

If I had hair it'd pulled out by now.

I bet you've found your issue.

Don't presume. Plugs can break down with no visual clue.
I had an old cbr600 with a similar problem and the plugs looked a perfect colour. I eventually threw in a new set of plugs out of desperation and bingo, problem solved.

Thank you for your reply.

The plugs are not very old, but I'll order a new set of plugs and give it a go. It certainly won't harm. It only takes one to cause problems.

noobie

Clueless in most things
I only asked in case some one was close and they might have a few spare plugs to try?

We asked earlier on in the thread with regard to spare carbs/borrowing working ones for an hr or so but no such like I'm afraid.

I have ordered the plugs and they should be here early next week.
I have tried an old ecu and that made no change
I have also set the throttle position sensor (potentiometer)on the carbs to the correct voltage values using the Haynes manual calculation guide. Not road tested yet as ran out of time.
Will keep updated with the elimination process.
Thanks again for all your help

Good evening,

I've now tested the bird after my tps sensor setting and no difference.

I have replaced the plugs with new ones and done an oil and filter change, not that oil has anything to with this issue but was time for it to be done. No diffrrence.

I think I've covered pretty much everything that it could be, well apart from what is causing the issue!!! I will get some second hand plug caps and try those as new are £60 each!!!

Ummmmmmm I don't know now. We've exhausted our options and I'm exhausted!!!!

Any chance previous owner has fitted a timing advance plate ?
