Isn't it great that we're all very different people and have such different backgrounds and ideas.
I have no wish to spend any amount of money on summat like a GSXR 600, even if it was the bargain of the century, i'd rather drive my cage..
Ya see, some things just don't float my boat and if i cannot afford to keep my BB or some other grizzly machine then i'll not have a bike....the bike is just an adrenalin rush, a pleasure and NOT a must have for me.
I'll NEVER knock anyone for being a BIKER or whatever but its not my choice.
I am a member of the BMF and i will stand up for my rights but i won't be rid of my car to become a martyr for the cause.
I would love to own a big fat hog with open pipes, big tank, straight bars and ghosted flame paint but it won't make me a HARLEY fan or a Hells Angel,, can you see where i'm coming from? :yo:

Yeah,I can. I never stated that I didn't. If you read through this post you'll see that I haven't slagged anyone off or personally dug at anyone (Quite rare for me :} ). I've just put mi point across about the fashion item bit and even complimented those who bought a bike for the fashion pose but have stuck with it cos they realised how good riding is.
I also put across the point that I'd never be without a bike.

So geezer - You tell me where I've insulted you personally or anyone else.
I thought it was ya job to be observant?

is it the same for some women as well as men their passion for bikes. The answers yes. My first bike was my escape from reality, she was my world only a 100cc but she was my life. the girls would go on the bus on a friday night into notts, not me, on my bike wearing belstaffs in the rain short skirt and high heels in a rook sack. bought my first bike on a thursday, never been on a bike in my life, brother taught me to ride it in 4 hours so went to work on it next day in notts town centre. As for scars and bleeding, took breck hill corner in rain no gloves too fast, hit manhole cover as i was late for work. took skin off hands and scar on back only, very lucky. got straight back on didnt give a shit, only worried if bike was ok. since having bird passion stronger. never lost the bike in my blood, just had to realise family come first. our rob says if i passed my test he would never see me.

Please don't bring 'getting rid of the government' into this rather interesting debate. The trouble with that is, it isn't an option because they have to be replaced with another government, who also don't do what they said in the manifesto and in any event spend the next however many years blaming everything on the last government. Frankly, there has not been a candidate up for election for anything, that I have wanted to vote for since Mme Braddock became Speaker of the House of Commons. But that's another issue. Until someone forms the 'Let's Just All Be a Bit Sensible for a Change' party, I can't see myself wanting to vote for anyone in the future either. Every time we have an election I have to offer up a personal apology to the soul of Mrs Pankhurst - I shall have to see whether she has forgiven me at some time in the future!

Back to bikes.

Ian Robbo said 'There's a fine line between a hobby and mental illness' and I have to say that appears to be the case with some peeps!

I believe also that you would need to have the support of your wife/partner if you wanted to be at peace with your bike when you were on your beam uppers - and we all know women who wouldn't give that support. (I think maybe possibly I'm not one of those; I seem to recall I had an account with GE Capital Finance in my own name to pay for a bike owned by a Mr P Chapman even before my name was the same! - I hope I'm not anyway, we were somewhat boracic at the time!) I don't think there's anything wrong at all in getting rid of your bike for practical reasons and then getting another one later when circumstances allow. Hell, we were having a (silly) conversation last week about what we would do when we're older (a lot older hopefully!) if Pete for some reason was too creaky to ride anything like we've got now. We both decided that we'd rather have any sort of bike, than no bike at all.

PS But with the caveat, only if I can have matching/colour co-ordinated leathers, obviously.

Is a lunp
going to a bike show , does not make you a biker(somebody brought up the bulldog) ask ben they even let people in wearing farahs!!!

there are hundreds nah thousands of people out there who have will buy a bike, because it makes them feel that they are a rebel, a weekend warrior etc etc.

Bikes are a fashion item to the rich. they change them every year, for the latest yamhonkawasuz, because it has different colours a new angle on the tyre valve etc.

B-gger you Wolfie

I go out for a full day on my Bbird and you choose today to start probably the best thread since I became a member :bang: I think Honda had it right.... just because you are breathing doesn't mean you are alive. That's what it is all about. The sheer buzz (sorry Buzz) of being on something that is exciting ; be it a screaming 125 or a bbird. Am I a biker or a motorcyclist... I don't know and I don't give a sh1t. I will fight any govt. to enjoy two wheels.Vote the current tw-ts out and the next tw-ts in. None of them give a damn what we want! :bang:

Does it really matter who rides what and why??

We all have different taste, finances or even reasons for what we ride. Its a bit like asking why does he or she buy a Mondeo or a Citroen. Life would be very boring if we all had the same views and ideas. The Blackbird rocks my boat for me, even though I will never be able to unleash the power and handling to its full extent, does that make me a snob for buying one, or a spoilt rich middle aged old fart, or someone who appreciates the lines and enginering of the bike. Maybe the lads and lasses on this forum make the bike all the better, for the good advice (and offers of bits and pieces) etc that can be had here.

Am I a bike freak, nope, just a middle aged family man with 2 kids, 7 and 8 years old, I'm nothing special, I just like my bike, like the freedom it brings, beating traffic is a bonus, the wife likes it as well, and we can't wait till the kids are old enough and we can tour Europe on a Pan Euro or similar. I've been to a bike show, liked it and will go to another one, would have liked to have come to the BASH, but work and family prevent it this year, ho hum maybe next year.

Dream Job or Not ?

I'v allways had a bike in some shape or form, not allways owend by me (job, not stolen) I actually lost intest in riding bikes while riding for a living, 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week (+ loads of o/time) on a rota shift (days & nights) all year round, including b/hols, Xmas etc, I did this for nearly 17 years.
After the initial novelty wore off, ie spending all 8hrs piss wet through & freezing, the last thing I wanted to do was get home and get my bike out for pleasure 8ree! .
I had a brake from bikes for nearly 2yrs when the job ceased, but in that time I still stopped and looked at every bike I saw, then one day my wife said ''why dont u get another one, just cheap one'' so I did, CBX 750 then T/cat, F/blade (wish I still had, as well as the BB) and now the best bike on the road, for what I want it for anyway.
Now I can ride the bike I want, when I want, the way want. :m
Clothing, the Mrs & I do like to look presentable, whether on the bike or not, that may just be our generation thing ?.
I try and use the bike only in good weather ie summer, dont like getting it out for short trips, summer only use 10k a year.
So after 29yrs (I know some have a lot more) of biking, 2yrs off and I'm not a biker ????. :violin:

Fashion? I don't think so. Like Clive, I don't give a stuff if anyone sees me on my Bird or not - it's not why I ride it. In fact, most folks, when they hear I ride a motorcycle, think I'm just another middle-aged bloke with middle-life crisis. They may well be right.

Unlike some here, I didn't grow up with bikes; I had no role models; everyone I knew drove cars, even when I was a kid. Soon as I could, I got powered transport, best I could afford - a Triumph Tigress 250cc twin scooter for 30 quid - and I was done! Lethal machine - didn't handle, couldn't stop, always overheating. After I started work and had some money, I got a car and never considered bikes at all (dirty, dangerous, noisey things, ridden by bad guys).

25 years ago I started flying, still my main and abiding passion. I began to notice that a lot of the guys who were good pilots, who were passionate about flight and not just in it for a job, were also bikers. But I'm a bit slow, so it never really sank in. Sure, I looked at bikes and thought 'that would be good - the performance of a Ferrari at a fraction the price'. But it still didn't gel with me.

It wasn't untill a few years ago that a flying mate was talking about biking to me with the same passion he talked of flying. That lit the fuse. I did CBT, DAS, and bought a VFR. At first, I wasn't sure I'd made a good descision - it's just so dangerous, isn't it? And at my age? A big, red, powerful motorcycle? text book case - mid life crisis.

Then I decdided to just enjoy my 'crisis'. I test rode a 'Bird, and the Viffer had to go. Might as well go the whole hog and get a sports car, so I bought an MX5 (shades of the Spitfire I used to drive - not fly, unfortunataly - many years ago). I love my MX on a hot day with the roof down, but it doesn't replace the 'Bird.

I still think it's by far the most dangerous thing I do, and very irresponsible for a wage earning dad. But one maxim I've always lived by - the reason I got a pilot's licence when it looked like financial madness - is that LIFE IS FOR LIVING. You're a long time dead. I meet so many folk who say "I'd love to have done that but...." You're on this earth for about ten minutes. If you are lucky enough to have time for reflection on your death bed, don't be thinking "if only I'd.........."

And it has nothing to do with fashion, but it has everything to do with LIVING!!!!

I'm lost!

Having read this thread I think it's lost its way, or maybe I have!!

For the record: I agree with Wolfie we need to stand up and fight our corner.
I agree with (someone) there are prats out there with whose brush we all get tarnished.
I don't think you can pidgeon-hole us (other than prats/non prats)
I don't like pretty pretty bikes and pretty pretty leathers etc but each to his own.
I have been riding since I was 10 (with a 12 year gap), I was racing at 16 til early twenties. I'm now 52. When I had the gap I missed bikes terribly but kids divorce etc etc prevented me getting one then someone asked me if I wanted to race a Ducati. I turned up (after a bit of paperwork) threw my leg over for the first time in years and raced......like a ----ing granny I might add but I did it. I was hooked again and few months later bought a bike again.
I love the thrill of a bit of speed
I don't get my knee down (on public roads)
I love touring
I like all bikes..if I could afford it I'd have a stable full to suit each mood
I like polishing my bike
I love bikes, I have a PASSION FOR bikes
What does all this make me? A biker? A motorcyclist? I don't care. :dunno:
Stand up and and fight for US!

Nobody in my family ever owned a bike, but somehow from the age of about seven I knew that I wanted one, I got my first bike when I was about 12, it was a clarks scampi step through with the engine on the back wheel, but I was never allowed to take it out of the garden (luckily we had a large garden) at the age of 13 I stepped up to a Triumph 200 tiger cub which I used to push quarter of a mile to the valley, before I could get on it. I joined the Navy at sixteen so my biking days went on hold but as soon as I was posted to a shore base I purchased an Aerial arrow and a Honda c50, then after another stint at sea prior to leaving the Navy I bought a Cz175 since then I have owned several bikes my last one being a 600 Bandit. when you read the list of bikes that I have owned some of you may laugh, That is your problem not mine I have enjoyed just about every minute on my bikes. I am currently bikeless not through choice but injury but I know that my biking days are not over, and I am living for the day in the not too distant future when I am in my local Honda dealer, cash In hand buying my BB.

:yo: My first road legal bike was a Tiger cub too which my Dad bought me at 16. It siezed and then I got a Mountain Cub. Knobbly tyres and upswept exhaust! Was a bit more like my crossers I had at the time, ('cept much slower) a CZ250 (nice) and Husquavarna 400 (evil bastard that I could'nt handle!). Got rid of the Husky and got a BSA 450 Gand Prix Victor. Just sublime. Not so quick as the 2 strokes but fantastic in the mud and sounded wonderful. I saw one of the Beezers on EBAY a few months ago. I was sorely tempted. How can it still be going AND racing at that!!?
