BASTID sump plug

Been there, and had one

I think the heat/freezing thing may have been a dead end. With oil in the sump heat transfer would have nullified any effect?? Probably just as well warming the motor up.

Did you try the heat/freeze combo? if not then def worth a try, it's amazin how a bit of heat can loosen stuff off. Although I would have thought a decent twatting with the ammer would've worked. Incidentally Aluminium expands/contracts almost twice as much as steel for a given temp.
In any case if ya use a naked flame just 'be prepared' (yeah I know prob goes without saying) and make sure your camera is rolling first just in case.

So, warm engine, freezer spray to stump bolt. However if you've already rounded the hex off on the bolt then you've not had the correct tool and this may be the reason you can't undo it... not seized... but not enough purchase.

You aren't listening - what I am saying is that with a full sump of oil I don't think the hot/cold thing would work as the oil will simply soak up any difference immediately by way of heat transfer.

Correct tool was used - six sided 17mm socket - problem is that there is not much 'depth' to the bolt head and it is also pretty soft hence the rounding and slipping off.

Trust me when I say it was seized - couldn;t even get the washer off the back of the bolt when it eventually made a break for freedom.

Seized you say.... how could it be seized, the threads were lubricated with oil on assembly.

Hydraulic loc, no likely as it was not a blind thread

Thread bottomed out, ish, possible that the sealing washer was crushed enough that the bolt head end of the thread was crushed into the sumps threaded hole. So either the seal washer was to thin or and the 'countersink' on the sumps hole is non existent.

You forgot fitting the sealing washer completely

You overtightened the bolt.

If you rounded off the bolts head with a socket, chances are you did not push on the socket/back of the wrench while providing 'undoing' force.

Effing hell, I give up.fl4g71 If I could be bothered I would post a picture of the bolt and washer so you could see the extent of the corrosion. Washer still stuck to the bolt and I guess it was also 'corroded' to the pan. Eff all to do with wrong washer (It wasn't)/wrong torque (it wasn't) or anything else.

Suppose the odd problem with fastenings is magnified for me as I actually ride the Bird and therefore it needs servicing more often than the shiny paintwork mob.

When was I whinging?? I was pissed off at having a pain in the arse problem that should never happen in a million years. The day I take a bike to a dealer for a service is the day when I know I am no longer a REAL biker.

Effing hell,

Suppose the odd problem with fastenings is magnified for me as I actually ride the Bird and therefore it needs MAINTAINING more often than the shiny paintwork mob.

Corrected for you.

The Shiny paintwork mob, tend to maintain their bikes and not just service them. The advantage is while actually cleaning their bikes they are able to inspect and maintain.

:-0)

Yer ALWAYS winging!!:dunno: if it's not about a slightly stiff sump plug, it's about some other nondescript thing that you cant fathom or feel hard done by!!:dunno:
just GROW a set, and get on with it!!:dunno:

and if you'd read what I actually wrote, instead of stamping your foot in a paddy like a ten year old:-0) you would have read the words "oil change" somewhat different to a "service"

Just use the Vaseline this time!
@tu* The only common sense suggestion in the whole fookin thread! Truly waterproof and if applied either side of the washer might have saved all the hassle! but if i did use my bike all winter I think i would be spraying the like of the sump plug and maybe the oil cooler lines with ACF50 anyroad....Bankers I've Shit Them :wank:
