Thanks for the offer but..............

I took up the offer of a free pair fitted (its a long story........) only this morning.
Should have them fitted sometime next week so at least I'll not be doing any more Ivan Mauger impressions.....................

i will look at the price of these tyres, i asked the question and my boss said 190. to be honest i didnt look to see what they cost and all that. he had a reputation for being cheaper than the main tyre specialist here in yeovil so i just posted 190 blind so to speak. got to admit i have him as a bit of a grabber! i will post again if there is any change worth posting.
mind you dont know what the going rate is or what would be a good deal or what.
bobs rate of free seems the best so far!!! and has to be my fave

The Verdict - Official

Now done just over 300 miles on the Avons and they have bedded in nicely.
In fact today scraped not only my toe sliders:eek: but my titanium:rolleyes: knee sliders - on the road.

Front end turn in is quicker and I have loads more feedback than the O2O's.

It would appear these baby's have more bump absorption.

Hopefully my Ivan Mauger impersonating days are now over.......................................

Bring it on :yo:

Oh dear

knee sliders - on the road
another jester :rolleyes: and there was me thinking about getting some tuition from you. It would appear that I should be taking you out! There should be no need for that sort of behaviour on the road Mr Pinder; learn to read the road 8l1nd :}

Recently put the Avons on mine recommended by 1200 Pete to replace some old and sh***ed dunlops.

Immediately impressed with the overall performance and feel compared to the dunlops and the Bridgestones fitted to the previous Bird.

After about 1500 miles, still impressed, including several reasonably fast blats in the Isle of Man - no chicken strip on the rear tyre!

Oh - also did not seem to degrade the feel in the wet.

So overall, I'd vote for the Avons at the moment - infact I have - so there!

Fletch.

Avons (45/46)

Had Dunlop 205s %$fan , Moved to Av45/6 (from Pete :yo: ).
Tremendous.

Done 2500 miles on them, including trip in France.
The tyres are really good, smooth front (feels like a new bike!) no slips / slides (although have found the limits of ground clearance! Bodywork / belly contact :xm , and don't anybody bother mentioning rear shock spacer thx) and must have at leat 4000 miles left.

Really impressed.

Get the Avons.

4th place - tried an Avon. .

3rd place - did 2 tours on 020s. Great tyre but dated and not at their best in the wet when over half worn.

2nd place - Did 6500kms on a Diablo. Great tyre again.

1st place - did 9500kms on a Pilot Road and didn't slip once. Good in dry and wet. Great tyre. My favorite

Agreed...But try Michelin Pilot Sports...Fast-steering, hard-wearing...Good lookin'...

...Get em' warm first!! :yo:

I am on my 2nd front (AV45) and my 3rd rear (AV46) , great tire. However I have heard great news about the new Continental Conti Roadattack :yo: , plus a few mag. really praised them. Also about $80.00 (U.S.) a set less than the Avons

I am in need of new rubber and have read good news about Avon AV45+46 and Michelin Pilot Road on this forum.

I went for a search, found and resurected this thread.

So is there anybody out there who could rate the Michelin Pilot Road against the Avon AV45 + 46 B ?

I've been running the Pirelli for most of its life and fancy a bit of a (tyre) change.

Not too terrible dave.. you could have saved a quidlet by going to Pete though :p
So far all the Avons I have tried and tested have needed almost zero scrub in time.. about 10 miles and thats it !
They do not seem to suffer from a handy coat of silicone releasing agent as most of the others do..
Oh , trued a bike during the week that had Pilots on.. sorry guys, not even close to the Avons for feed back or grip . And I reiterate, the Avons that are currently on my bike have now done almost 7 k miles and I shall not need to change them for this years ride to Italy, so hellishly long lasting too !
( I have an ST on the back and an SP on the front )

As no-one else has come back to you on this I'll give you what little info. I can. I live in Mid Wales next to the UK's biggest bike tyre importer, Cambrian Tyres. They are the main UK importer of Contis and are genuinely recommending them to customers. One of the staff is running a Fazer 1000 on them and is very impressed. A Fireblade I know is on his second set and rates them highly. They are cheaper but unfortunately the last version of Contis had a habit of throwing treads and so peeps here are very wary of using any Conti tyre. Myself included. I have just put on new AV45/46 and won't think of changing brands until the dust has settled and they are no longer NEW Conti Attack. Maybe not even then. Avons Rule OK.

Go for Avons

When I bought my bird it had Dunlops fitted and even allowing for the fact the rear was just getting past it, I wondered what pile of shite I had bought! Fitted Avon ST's front and back and the bike was utterley transformed. Had been used to 020's on previous bike but the Avons are better dry and wet.

Typical

Fitted a new ST/SP combo on the bike today, went on a run to bed them in a bit, two miles out and it pisses it down :bang: .......ah well, better luck over the few days hopefully......

Fodder....I'll think you'll find that the Avon's will require very little scrubbing in. Fitted mine, and within 20 miles they were gripping the road like grippy things on grip tablets !!! Speaking to others, they have confirmed that the ST's seem to need no scrubbing period.....they grip straight from the box.

My two cents' worth: I'm using Pilot Roads at the moment. Like them very much. They stick well (I'm can be a semi-aggressive rider, and have several years of racing experience to help me along), seem to me comparable to the Avons that I used last year (sorry Jaws), not as quick or sticky as Pirellis (but don't wear anywhere near as stupid-fast), and allow me to toss the XX around with some confidence. I wouldn't put Dunlops on my XX if you paid me, but will recommend them over the Macadams any day (the stock Macadams were so badly cupped within 2000mi on the front that they literally howled when I rode, and they never felt planted. Rear wore nicely, though, I'll admit that.) I tried another XX with the 020's on it, and didn't mind them. Didn't much care for low-speed handling (under 30mph), but that may be due to different suspension settings than I have on mine. They seemed to work well.

I did see an XX shod with Metzlers. Curious about that, since I liked the Metzlers I've used on other bikes and on the track. Anyone?

My next set will be Pilot Sports, some time this fall. Since I ride year 'round, I have the opportunity to ride back-to-back with different tires on the same bike. Sorta nice for comparing (but can get expensive if I play in the canyons a lot). Unlike Jaws and some of the others who can and do try 'em regularly on different bikes, I'm doing it on the same bike with consistent setup and "feel" to it. Where I am now is good for trying tires, since there are many different pavement types, road types (mega-long straights on the desert floor, tight twisties up in the rockies, mixed stuff in between), elevations (makes for different temperatures/weather during the same ride) and odd seasonal weather (below freezing part of the year, hotter than Satan's nutsack the rest). As well, the desert heat and very, very dry air can dry and crack a set of tires faster than anywhere I've ever lived.

I rate them like this so far on the XX (will likely change as I try more tires on it):
1-Pilot Roads - surprisingly grippy for a sport-touring tire, decent ride, good wear, great in the wet, pretty good feedback, very nice through fast corners
2-Avon 45/46s - fairly grippy, better ride, wear similar to Roads, but expensive in comparison, good wet, better than Roads when cold, pretty good feedback, stable when moving fast through corners
3-Pirelli Diablos - grippy, sportier/harsher ride, very fast wear, good wet, yield confidence at all angles, expensive
4-020's - ride less compliant, acceptable grip, front feels somewhat vague at slower speeds
5-Dunlop 205's - rubber has decent grip but feel a tad vague when banked over, decent ride, wear oddly on the XX, not happy wet, just don't inspire total confidence, relatively inexpensive though
6-Macadam 90Xs - great at the beginning of their life but go away fast (especially the front), very good wet, feedback decent when new, sucky when only a few thousand miles old, noisy! (100X's s'posed to fix that)

That's all I've tried on a Blackbird. Like I said, Pilot Sports are next. I look forward to trying them out. Perhaps Metzlers if I'm feeling froggy later.

Anyways, thanks for letting me ramble!

Mike
