There is no doubt that an efficient system makes sense in many ways providing the install cost is appropriate to the return.

But everyone should understand before doing it that having panels installed on a long term contract might put buyers off if you decide to sell the house. Whether this is justified, fear of the unknown or just that they are usually pig ugly (the panels that is, not the buyers - although they are usually pig ugly too) is irrelevant.

If you don't believe me ask an estate agent.................

As an aside, a friend has recently bought a new build - the solar panels are built into the roof slates and unless they are pointed out you would never know they are there. Clever stuff.

At the time I did a LOT of research.. well it was a big layout and I was gonna gonna do it blind.

About the only advice I would offer is do not go for any of the 'rent your roof out' deals.
Bite the bullet and buy them out right..
Even if you get finance you will still eventually see a quite worth while return % on your investment

You will not be under any contract, and the income from the panels is transferable to a new owner
We recently had a valuation on the house to which was added a considerable sum ( more than half the installation cost of the panels ) by both the estate agents who did the valuations

That makes sense John - the 'rent a roof' may be regarded as a negative by many prospective buyers; instinctively I for one would be reluctant.

Now that FiT payments have reduced to almost diddly the rent a roof mob have moved on to another scam - buying out FiT contracts from dozy bastards wanting a few quid for fags, beer and tatts at the weekend. They tend to offer about 1/3 of the value of the contract up front and some suckers are going for it.

I'll let you know!

What is the current FIT ?

I believe it was dropped to match the present cost of installation ?
That was the excuse but that is hardly taking the long term view ..
I expect to get about ?1200 a year tax free income after the things have paid for them selves ( so a return of maybe ?17k on a ?10.5k investment )

4.2p I think. I got in at 13p and paid 4.7k for a 4kW system. I expect payback in around 6 years. I am anticipating around £600 income p.a and £200 leccy savings at this years rates. It works out at 23% APR on the 4.7k over the 20 years according to the install estimate but I am outperforming their output figures by around 15%.

No idea.. We get to use up to 50% of what we generate at a reduced charge and then 45p per unit generated as well

strange. must have been different back then. I use what I like and get paid about 5p per unit for an assumed 50% export back to the grid - even if I use it all. I then get paid 13p for every unit for generation. Unless that's what you meant.

Well, we have just signed up. 14 panels, of the new high output Mono crystalline units.
Being installed next month, Tariffs are low, but we recon we will be in profit in about eight years.
I really looked into all the pitfalls, sneaky system shortcuts, and dirty dealings, and all appears to be ok.
San has done all the counting, adding and subtracting of figures, and seems very happy with in and out prices.
One of the new battery store systems was mentioned, and soon dismissed when he told us the price!! Can't afford that yet.
Just wish we could have done it sooner, the tariffs drop again the end of this month!
No one mentioned the 9 page form to fill in for getting the system and payments registered with your energy suppliers!

Thanks for all the info, advice and figures!

Our installers did all that for us !

There is no registration with your energy suppliers. Presume he means FiT supplier. I did mine but was piece of piss using data supplied by installers. If installers did it were you allowed to choose FiT supplier?

Yes, ours is coming back to do ours, ( our decision, we had stuff to do last night and time was short).
We are with Scottish power for our gas n leccy, and are staying with them so all paperwork will be for them.
I think I mean FIT supplier? But lots of options were mentioned, and in the end we decided to stay with who we are with as the figures were the same for different companies.

Yes, all rates the same whoever you go with but like your energy supplier you can choose who to go with for your FiT. I am with Scottish Power for energy but it was suggested I went with the Co-Op for FiT due to their customer service. They are good but slow payers. EDF seem to be about the quickest payers.
