Not really intending this to be contentious as such but I just noticed this from the BBC:
The nationalities most commonly applying for asylum were people from Iran, Eritrea, Afghanistan, China and Somalia.
Now if you lived in any of these countries and wanted somewhere safe to go why would you come all this way. Wouldn't you look around for somewhere more in line with your language and cultural experiences?
I've often heard folks in the UK bemoaning how things are and that they'd like to leave the country. But most of those talk about going to North America, Europe or Australia/New Zealand...... i.e. places where the language/culture are not too far from what is familiar. :dunno:
