7 BHP Increase by changing the Oil

Just found this in the pages of Superbike.

Silkolene claim that by using their Pro 4 Plus Race oil you can get a BHP increase of around 4 BHP. BSD of Peterborough claim to have seen a 7 BHP increase when they put this oil in a Blackbird.

It's a 5-40w oil and they say it's safe to use on the road.

Not a bad increase which is possible with less friction, But what's the catch ????? I know people say you shouldn't use fully synthetic in the Bird but why??

Clutch clutch clutch slip. My mate wrecked his RSV-R after only two weeks by using a fully synth claiming something similar............ we took it back to the dealer saying, "this slipper-clutch is a bit wafty". Using the fully synth invalidated his warranty.

Use it at your peril.

This is the only oil I can put in the V&M without damaging it. It is specially formulated for wet clutches so doesn't give problems there. Don't know about performance increases but I do have to keep an eye on the oil level and top up regularly.

V&M ??? what might that be

Fully synthetic would not be sold if it caused problems with bikes. I used it in my ZX9 with out any problems (500 mineral, 4000 semi from 8000 fully synthetic)

I use semi in my bird, but no one has come up with a very good reason why you cant use fully synthetic in a bird.

My Rover V8s always used to run better after an oil change.

I bet if you measured it you would find one or two more horsepower clean oil v dirty in a bike too.

PLEASE PLEASE Tell me where HONDA have stated that FULLY SYNTHETIC should or MUST not be used in Blackbird?

My owners handbook states nothing of the sort and likewise Silkolene web site reommends the stuff, which would leave them wide open if an engine failure could be shown as a result of using such lubricant?

I have used Fully Syn for the last two years covering 7,000 miles and NOT a single problem........!

I would gladly swop to Semi and save the money, but Fully is not much more expensive (?23 from show) so why NOT!

Robert - you put in your bike whatever you like! I'm not telling you what or what not.

All I know is...... Honda recommend not to put fully synth in the Bird.

As Adam said above, the topic has been done to death before with input from people far more knowledgeable than I.

You please yerself mate.......

I want to put in the correct oil........................NO QUESTIONS ASKED

BUT I can't find where Honda say that FULLY must or should NOT be used other that as a general statement on this site.

My dealer says FULLY is okay?
The handbook is NOT specific and state "top quality"?
Silkolene says FULLY, but I agree they could simply be trying to make a quick pound

Please can anybody on here show me where Honda have said this?

Cheers

RM have put over 30k on my bike in the last 20 months and have only ever had semi-synth put in following advice & guidance from our one and only Jaws

I won't blindly follow the latest trend, but listen to the good advice from the guys & gals on the site k1ap...........it can just be a bit of a minefield avoiding all the b***s**t that's out there too :f

Oil is the blood of your bike. It's your bike

If you use fully synthetic oil in your bike from day one your rings won't seat properly - you MUST use a petroleum oil. FACT.

Countless mechanics and dealer's (including a Honda one) told me not to use fully synthetic in the 1100. But hey go ahead, make sure to post your findings on here.

Nobby - V&M Racing? Yellow and Red livery? TT specialists? Ian Duffis and the late great David Jefferies on the R1's? Jim Moody? Shame on you man!
They did a hotter BlackBird for the 50th anniversary called the CBR1200XX. Numbers were limited, Gerry owns one. V&M guaranteed it had 180 rwhp and interestingly they chose to tune a carbed version even though the injected bike was already out. They put out 200bhp at the crank and usually a smidgen short of 180 at the rear wheel. It had a 4 into 1 Akra system and was really the bike that Honda should be producing NOW.

Here's one of Jaws comments, - post No 3

http://www.bikersoracle.com/blackbird/forum/showthread.php?t=21469&highlight=fully+synthetic

and another, post No 2

http://www.bikersoracle.com/blackbird/forum/showthread.php?t=8947&highlight=fully+synthetic

Things is Robert, if there is ANY doubt, why bother with it? The Bird is a long lasting high mileage bike on semi synth or mineral oil, so there seems little point in spending more for fully synth on that basis alone. There doesn't seem to be any advantage to using fully synth anywhere :dunno:

But anyway, you must decide for your own reasons.

Feck!! I said I would never get involved in another fully synth oil thread again :bang:
