This gyrocopter was designed to be carried on board a U boat and towed behind to enable observations over greater distance when surface running.

No engine, the U boat speed through the water keeps it airborne.

I don't think it was effective when submerged - although when I think about it, it might have been a cool experiment to see if the U boat speed just fully submerged would be sufficient to keep it airborne.

That would have made an interesting sight mid ocean

Research has identified that large quantities of ethyl formate are present in the centre of the Milky Way - this is the chemical that gives raspberries their flavour and, curiously, smells of rum.
