This gyrocopter was designed to be carried on board a U boat and towed behind to enable observations over greater distance when surface running.

No engine, the U boat speed through the water keeps it airborne.

I don't think it was effective when submerged - although when I think about it, it might have been a cool experiment to see if the U boat speed just fully submerged would be sufficient to keep it airborne.

That would have made an interesting sight mid ocean :)
