Came as close as I ever have and ever want to having a really big accident this morning.
Minding my own business at 40 mph on a single carriageway, van coming in the opposite direction stopped to do a right turn into a turning on my left. For reasons only he will ever know he started his manoeuvre just as I was approaching him, I slammed on the anchors and ended up level with the van driver who had crossed the centre line by about four feet. How I missed him I'll never know.
He looked as shocked as I was and credit to him he wound his window down and apologised.
After pulling away I had to stop less than a minute later to get my act together.
Modern cars are brilliant - I absolutely jumped on the brakes but was still able to steer and the only protest from the car was a few chirps from the tyres as the ABS kicked in and the hazards coming on automatically.
Sitting here trying not to think what might have been, and actually feeling quite proud of my reaction in avoiding a head on.
