Came as close as I ever have and ever want to having a really big accident this morning.

Minding my own business at 40 mph on a single carriageway, van coming in the opposite direction stopped to do a right turn into a turning on my left. For reasons only he will ever know he started his manoeuvre just as I was approaching him, I slammed on the anchors and ended up level with the van driver who had crossed the centre line by about four feet. How I missed him I'll never know.

He looked as shocked as I was and credit to him he wound his window down and apologised.

After pulling away I had to stop less than a minute later to get my act together.

Modern cars are brilliant - I absolutely jumped on the brakes but was still able to steer and the only protest from the car was a few chirps from the tyres as the ABS kicked in and the hazards coming on automatically.

Sitting here trying not to think what might have been, and actually feeling quite proud of my reaction in avoiding a head on.

I see this on a daily basis. People seem to be paying far less attention to what they're doing these days.

I regularly have people cut in front of me, not letting you out on motorways when I've been signalling for ages.... The list goes on.

Most of them are too busy on their phones etc to appreciate that the 42ft of pick up and trailer takes some stopping

Doesn’t the horn automatically sound with aggression? :p

I agree.

Ironically the only other near biggie I had involved approximately 42 feet of lorry...on Rumanian plates.

Happily sitting at 70mph in lane one on a two lane carriage way and saw it starting to move in a layby, it got near the end of the slip and just kept going at no more than 10mph leaving me with nowhere to go as there's was traffic in lane 2. Jumped on the Swedish anchors and waited for the car behind me to plough into the back of us. To this day I don't know where he went, must have swerved into lane 2. When I overtook the lorry the driver was on the phone, oblivious to the carnage he almost caused.

If nothing else it reinforces the usefulness of having a dashcam.

The BM unit is a great dash cam. Expensive but worth it having front and rear cameras. Just be aware if you go aboard, they’re illegal in an awful lot of Euroland.

Mine is brilliant on the forward camera, less so on the rear due to the privacy glass. Any idea if there is some way of adjusting the rear?

Only the second time out on the Tourer I had to aggressively test my brakes due to a tranny (no not one of those)
pulling off from a central reservation and crossing the carriage way, not only in front of me but also the car I was passing,
while aggressively testing my acceleration!

I have privacy glass on mine but the footage from my rear camera is fine, albeit a little darker. I haven’t seen anything obvious for adjusting them, so maybe check the manual.

Are you sure it wasn't one of those if he was pulling off.

You mean like the comfort, cruise control, speed limiter, versatility, boot space, stop start technology, satnav, media, etc etc
I do indeed.

does yours memorise the last fifty five yards of your journey then automatically reverse same at the touch of a button?

And look awesome ?

I’m perfectly capable of remembering journeys by myself, some even longer than 50yds

I actually find reversing cameras more of a hindrance than help
That's precisely why I don't have one. We were on holiday in the States a couple of years back and the two SUVs we hired both had them. I became fixated on the bastard things instead of checking my mirrors and looking over my shoulders. I nearly clobbered four cars, two fences and a bollard (all on separate occasions).
Ok, hands up, each potential incident was my fault and not the car's but I honestly found the reversing camera a liability and would never spec one on any new car I buy.

Out yesterday mainly on country roads.
3 cars overtook me across a continuous white line in a housing area even though I was doing the speed limit.

2 runners on the road dressed in black.
A woman walking in dark clothes.

Back in town 3 people coming at me on wrong side of the road, 2 within 30 seconds of each other.

I was wearing hiviz and lights come on automatically.
