I have been talking to my brother in law today who lives in Vienna, and by comparison, I think we don't do too bad.
My nephew is 21. Fit, healthy, no previous health issues. 2 weeks ago he collapses whilst having a shower.
He is rushed to Hospital where it transpires he had a cardiac arrest.
He gets transferred to another Hospital who keep him for a couple of days, do a couple of checks and then send him back to the main Hospital in Vienna.
Anyway, long story short, they wire him up to all the monitors (as those of us who have had heart conditions will recall) and it takes 10 days before he gets an ultrasound, ECG, MRI or anything else.
At long last, today he went down and had a pacemaker fitted having decided that they still aren't sure what the exact cause of te problem is.
Anyway, chatting to my brother in law he asked how long did it take me to get p1ssed off with the treatment I received. I said, I didn't, if anything I have nothing but praise for the way I was looked after. I was diagnosed quickly, treatement was adminstered from the off and we as a family were kept fully in the loop as to what was happening and they spoke to me, my wife and my daughter as a family and did not patronise or talk down to us.
That is very different to how my nephew has been treated in Austria, and they pay for this service (well in their case, the United Nations is paying for it as my sister in law works for the UN) but it put it into perspective, that no matter how much you pay, you cannot guarantee being treated any better than those of use who rely on the NHS.
All being well, he will be discharged in the next 24 - 48 hours and his attitude is, "Get me away from here as soon as possible
