I love the way he has rigged up the fuel, supply from an old jerry can and a bit of garden hose then wanders round with a fag in his mouth.

Ah, those crazy Germans....

I used to mess around with Coventry Climax, Reliant & A Series engines quite a lot, had a few of those running & bouncing around the yard on their sumps its quite amusing but there isn't really much to getting any good engine running in a jig as long as you have all right the bits so to be honest I'm not all that impressed

Don't get me wrong I like the above but just don't think its that clever if you can lay your hands on a big motor

That's cos it's extremely difficult to ignite fumes with a smouldering cigarette, you thick twat!

Yes, really. Don't believe everything you see in movies, like Bruce Willis blowing up a building by flicking his fag end into a puddle of petrol. It will not go up. The fag will get saturated and extinguish long before the embers can even think about reaching the required temperature to ignite the vapours.

Yes really, diesel/ kerosene fumes need compression or a naked flame to ignite easily

Saved me the trouble. Cheers, Slim (y)

So smoking near diesel is perfectly safe then

Give me a break.....

Diesel is less volatile than petrol, so under the majority of circumstances, yes.

Serious question here: are you really that dumb or are you trying to get some mileage out of this thread?

If you lot could stop explaining it to him for a sec, then he might just be curious enough to go out to the garage and give it a try.... :D

He's busy now, desperately scouring the internet to find an example of how someone set alight diesel fumes with a fag end.

Knowing Andrew, it's a wind-up. He's bored; his wife has hidden the keys to his tool box so he can't bugger up anything in the house; it's raining so he can't go play in the garden. With a bit of luck he might do something constructive and go buy a motorcycle, or something.

Wrong. I have got the mrs out in the garage stripping the paint off the entrance hall door so can't play out there.

It isn't raining, although it is very, very damp.

I am just about to make a chilli con carne for tomorrow's dinner....leaving it to stand for 24 hours ads to the flavour. A much better use of time than anything motorcycle related.

No-one said they can't catch fire. The difficulty here is getting you to understand that it's excruciatingly difficult to set fire to hydrocarbon vapours with a fag end.
Surely petrol fumes are 'hydro carbon vapours'?

Try flicking a lit fag at that!

They're hydrocarbon vapours, actually.

Petrol vapours are almost as difficult to ignite with a lit fag end. There are way too many variables, such as atmosphere i.e. if it's too rich (too much hydrocarbon vapour) or too lean (too much oxygen), then no boom. There has to be a spark and at the right temperature. Also critical is the flash point of the fuel, which can vary with temperature and density.
