I have welded up numerous diesel & petrol tanks after the pikey's had smacked a hole in them to get the fuel out, welding is plenty hot enough to set light to either fuel, but no bangs so far & I'm still intact

All this stuff around 'diesel doesn't ignite' etc. doesn't make it sensible whichever way you look at it.
Diesel doesn't ignite, you pillock. It's the hydrocarbon vapours that ignite, not the liquid. I've explained it once already and Slim has given you enough hints. Do some proper research and learn something instead of carpet-bombing the rest of us with your ignorance.

Stop deflecting, bell-end. I have neither said, written, intimated nor indicated any such thing. What I have done is stated that it is incredibly difficult to ignite hydrocarbon vapours with a fag-end, explained why this is the case and, on the basis of the foregoing told you not to believe everything you see in the movies.
What you've been suggesting is the same sort of bell-endery that prohibits the use of cell phones on fuel station forecourts.

Simple question - do you think it is a good idea to smoke a fag around anything involving fuel, particularly a Heath Robinson contraption like that in the original video?

Oh yes, your question: as Slim said, it’s a bad idea if you’re a non-smoker because it’s unhealthy. Aside from that, it’s neither nor because it makes no difference because the fag is extremely unlikely to ignite the vapour.
As a younger child than I am now, I have thrown diesel on a roaring camp fire in the woods and nearly put it out as good as throwing a bucket of water on it.
