USA 2nd amendment was designed so that the people could defend themselves against a corrupt government. Hasn't worked, has it? :p I believe all governments are inherently corrupt and only a free press limits how far they will go.

I’ve posted elsewhere that I don’t read newspapers and that I despise politicians per se for what they’ve done to this country; and my greatest despair is that I’m just one of a whole generation that let them get away with it.

Call my posts depressing and tedious and I’ll understand: call them pointless and I’ll wonder if you’re still reading them, or whether you’ve chosen to ignore them, but: I’ll keep on posting them anyway because turning my face to wall and pretending that “there’s nothing I can do about this” isn’t an option for me anymore.

It doesn’t make sense that not only keyworkers, but also every person in the country and most of the others on this planet should be living in mortal fear of something they know nothing about, other than what their governments choose to tell them. Whether we acknowledge it or not, we’re living in a dictatorship; benign, for the time being, but with no guarantees for the future. What’s truly frightening to me is that we’re doing that by choice.

Information vital to the existence of our society is being supressed and/or manipulated by our government; openly, covertly and comprehensively. The most reliable sources for untainted information (or, at least, information that's nearer to being truthful, valid and reliable) are the “independent” sources available via the internet. To the best of my ability, I check the sources I use before publicising them to alert those on this site and elsewhere to the fact that the mainstream media has become untrustworthy - and how and why that is the case.

That is why I say - with great respect and deepest empathy: If people don’t want to know the information, they should exercise their right not to read it.

I understand. But I won’t stop.

  1. I simply don't wear that you aren't posting to your personal agenda; in my view the majority of the links you put up are 'anti-establishment' and/or covertly or overtly hinting at or yelling 'conspiracy' and/or applying the (usually unhelpful) gift of 20/20 hindsight
  2. It's a free world but I am constantly baffled why you feel the need to 'inform' others on here about the current pandemic; do you not think we are capable of seeking the information that we want for ourselves rather than having it constantly hurled at us? Why are you the aribiter of what is 'good' information? To me it just comes over as patronising and, to echo what someone mentioned above, it is now beyond tedious as far as I am concerned, particularly as I can't ignore it as a moderator

Brainwashed by media reports which are guestimates at best...
Sure I read a post on here where first hand front line NHS knowledge is available on request, but can't remember who posted it?

Tell me what you're going to do, DA..? Honestly... how are you going to make a difference..?
My choice to make a difference was to work with a few neighbours to set up a community support group and help the vulnerable and housebound.

I don't choose to read your posts, BTW, I have to as a moderator.
I can’t change anything on my own, I know that. But there’s nothing in me that says that I shouldn’t try. Even if it’s only from behind a keyboard while sitting warm and cosy in my home. I have to do something - because it might provide the tiniest motivation for somebody else, somewhere else, to do something about the situation we’ve been in for twenty years or more. And then, someone else…

Returning from France a few years ago, on a road running parallel to the Autoroute, we saw that the motorway was at a standstill. The lorry drivers were protesting against the government and there was a rolling blockade that went on for miles. My wife said, “Just imagine if the farmers in England did that - or our lorry drivers - everyone would be alright for a couple of days, and then they’d call it off due to “public protests.” I remember laughing and saying something like, “Not in France, they won’t. The French rule the government - not the other way around!”

Remember the Gilles Jaunes in France? The newspapers over here wouldn’t publish reports about the riots they caused and the TV stations blanked them out, too. Remember? Eventually, the government had to cancel their intended changes to pension age and payments. The GJ actions only ceased because of Covid-19. Did you know?

Meanwhile, back in Blighty: illegal wars. Political and religious corruption. The rise of bigotry and hatred on the back of ten years of “austerity”. The government’s theft of pension funds and “No magic money tree”. The Brexit fiasco - and it was, and still is a fiasco, regardless of whether you were for or against - and all along, we’ve just taken it on the chin (me included) and floated along with the tide, because I was “comfortable with my life”.

It’s all just gone by, accepted or ignored, because it’s all in the past. And then we have VE day and we “remember” all those who died defending our freedom while, at the same time, we’re giving away our freedom like it was a worthless toy. We parade down the high street, passing the homeless civilians and the homeless War Vets on our way. And we close our eyes, every day, because we don’t want to see the reality of what’s in front of us and the potential for what might be ahead of us.

It strikes me that you've picked the wrong platform for instigating change.
Have you... and I'm not taking the piss... thought about entering politics..?

They say the best way to change something is from the inside.

Not the best platform, maybe - but it's not the only one, either. :p

Agreed - I gave the same advice to someone a few years ago.

I'm only approaching my seventieth birthday yet I'm dog tired of what feels like a lifetime of being equal parts angry and helpless in the face of a world where a hard core of people hold most of the cards and are invariably in a position to guarantee that the hand you're dealt will depend on whether you play along or not.

That's me approaching my 70th an' all.

Perhaps, just perhaps, they haven’t been pushed far enough yet, either way they have that option under the constitution, realised by the country’s lawmakers of the time who had to resist the corrupt and oppressive government at the time, the realisation that nobody can negotiate from a position of weakness but can only capitulate was the driving factor behind the amendment. I have always maintained that power devolved from the individual to the state needs to be scrutinised to the highest level in the interests of liberty, because let us not forget that liberty is very rarely given, history tells us it nearly always needs to be taken and defended and normally with huge cost.
I agree about your comment on a free press Bill, but would add a free thinking and educated citizenship is essential as well.
We surely live in interesting times buddy.

House of Lords then. There's plenty of old codgers in there who'll treat you as the young 'un. ;)

Not sure how to interpret that - would you be offended if I said it put a big, daft grin on me face?

Hmm this has turned interesting ! ;)

Just my 2p worth
I appreciate some of DA's posts & those of some others because they have found some opinions I would never have found myself, that doesn't mean I agree with all of them but most are worth reading if you have an interest in the world as it is today but ………….

I also agree its a bit much when every other post is about corvid 19. lets be honest a lot of us mess about on the net to avoid real life & anyway I don't think posting about it on here will make a toss of difference to any one of us

The solution ……….. stick all corvid posts in a section of their own & each of us can chose to read them or not as the case may be, once its all over it can be left or deleted as the admin desires & anything posted outside that (new) section should be deleted asap ;)
