SMIX - Helmet/anyone helmet

Well I 've learnt loads - never knew a helmet even had an ear recess?? :bang: Why didn't I get this info when buying any of the helmets I've owned??:dunno:

The biggest problem I have found is that the top of the face opening is often quite low, and as a shorty on a Bbird I lean quite low to reach the bars. With the opening being low, I find I have my view restricted, so I have to try the helmet on and sit on the bike, just to check visibility!!

My first helmet was an Arai which I loved, but when I replaced it I couldn't find one the same shape, and still haven't. The Nitro seems quite good, but now I have all this extra info, who knows what I'll end up with next!!!!!!!!

Hello Smixxy,

You will find one type or make that works, you obviously need one where the distance from the top of the visor to the top of the head is quite short. Start with that and then try a list of '' fitment checks.. requirements. Perhaps we should design a fitment check list.... is that sad.

I do have a simular problem, if the visors recess is too low my glasses end up taking the weight of the lid on my nose, and that hurts.

Beat me to it. I'm a sound engineer and yes decibels is a on logarithmic scale, so although 5db doesn't "sound" like much, it in fact is!

i have a hjc helmet model fg14,it is very light but also very noisy,it is a glass fibre/kevlar helmet and this may be the reason,my previous helmet a plastic flip type which i thought was noisy but it is better for noise than the hjc but alot heavier

Hello

Well, finally got the courage together with the cash, and went to buy a helmet! Always used to have Arai's, and really wanted to find one of those to fit.

So - Hein Gericke in Bristol are great!! The two guys there (Baz and Jonah - I think!) were quite happy to help me make sure the hat I liked fitted properly, and answered any silly questions I had!!

So, I now have a really gorgeous looking aluminium coloured (Arai don't seem to do Pink!) Condor Crash Hat in XS!!!!!!!! Hurrah. Much quieter than the Nitro I had, and really comfy (although quite hamsterish at the mo!)

Thanks for all the info on the topic of fitting etc on this thread and others! :k :k :k

I can recommend HG in Bristol for being the most helpful place I've bought a hat from ever!!!!!!!! :yo:

I'd still get the plugs. Arai's are noisey due the side pods covering the visor mechanism being right next to ya ear! I wore Arai's for years but now have a Shoei XR1000 for the road & track and an Arai Tour X for off road stuff. I have to say the Shoei is superior in quality of finnish & is obviously quieter than the Tour X (which you'd expect) but is also quieter than my previous road/track lid which was a Arai Quantum F.
However, after 23 years riding (same as me) a mate got diagnosed with tintanus two years ago, so I went and got the M-T-M plugs which are superb. The manufacturers retain a mould so that you can just ring up and order replacements whenever you need them.

I'm still using the horrid foam plugs for now. I'm just chuffed that the Arai is so comfy!Did try some Shoei's, but weren't quite as good a fit. Don't think I have a Shoei shaped head!!

Yep, know what ya mean. In fact, of the Shoei range, twas only the XR1000 that suited my head shape - the so called superior model didn't! :dunno:
Enjoy ya Arai.

I have a huge box of Aearo Yellow foam ear plugs - like you get in factories!

Some day I'll sort out getting some that are moulded! But if I run out of these before then, I'll try the ones you suggested. :k
