SMIX - Helmet - now EAR PLUGS

In the help bit... regarding helmets, you said you were looking/saving for a new lid.. If you found the Nitro 'ok', Try a HJC, I got one of these after a nitro and they are really quiet and snug. Recent Ride review on decibel test put the HJC at 10th, but not much more noisier (5db) than a schuberth which came 1st.

Had my HJC for about 8 months now and its still a good fit to the point that if I wear a balaclava its too tight, same if I let my hair get too long. with HJC you seem to need a size smaller than other helmets. both mine, my mates and the missis is an extra small - and my mate thought he was a medium.

I have also found that the fewer air intakes/top helmet vents you have the quieter a helmet is. Lug plugs help. I have used mine over 170mph and it does not move even glancing sideways at this speed.

Dont wanna be picky, but every 3db increase is a DOUBLING in volume...

Its a logarithmic scale, you see. %$fan

Beat me to it. I'm a sound engineer and yes decibels is a on logarithmic scale, so although 5db doesn't "sound" like much, it in fact is!

Thank you very much - I will go have a look and a try. :yo:

I have been trying to find some ear plugs that are made to fit into your ear. I saw someone at AllyPally once, but by the time I got to ringing the number it was out of service.

Anyone got any recommendations? :dunno: I really HATE the foam squishy plugs, although I do use them!!

Hi Smix,

Well being a sound engineer my ears are very important to me! I got some moulded earplugs made a couple of years ago at Ally Pally. I haven't seen the guy since, but here are the details that are on the case I got with them.

www.Earinc.com

www.FreeHearingTest.com

There's a number but I can't work it out,
it's 303 447 2619

I have no idea if any of these links will work, but good luck!

I fing moulded ear plugs much better than foam ones.

Cheers.

How do you know what my ear size is?? :} :} :} :}

Know the ones you mean, think you can order off the net, they send you a plug to mould a copy of your ear. Quite expensive from what I remember. Try

just found it on the net............

Forgot to add HJC helmet is from about ?89, well made and includes face mask (though I'm sure you dont need it), this mask is removable and vents to the outside. Chin guard to stop wind getting in and up from the front. Double D rings for a safe strap. Visor is brill as it has a position that prevents fogging. You will find that when trying to put it on initially it is bloody tight, as your head has to pass the neck support,,, Push it on hard and it will fit. Most people will buy a larger size because of this when they dont actually need it, go by the mm size. ie measure your head before you go.

I am often asked why I do not sell clothing and bash hats.. Its cos every single one of us has a different bonce and body ! ( Cept for Cyclops.. he shares his with a man who lives in the woods or so I am told )

You should always try before you buy.. Never make a decision on a recomendation.. take that recomendation to heart and go try what has been recomended.. make a decision then :p

dB gain:

3.8dB is doubling, but yes, if for instance a Schuberth was your yard stick and represented say, the level of sound from a radio on a volume setting of 3 ( out of ten ), then 5dB up from that would be a volume setting of ten ( ish ! :p )

Seem to think~~~~

Nitro and HJC come from the same moulds and the same factory as OGK

Slightly different fittings perhaps but essentially the same lid

Go figure and save yourself some wonga

Alternatively - save up and buy a great helmet

I bought the Schuberth last year and it's [for me] the best by far - bloody expensive though

Why do we disagree..... Both my missis and I prefer the HJC, to the Nitro (think its an aeroflow). When I tried the Nitro and the missis the HJC she found at about 80mph that her head weaved from side to side, as we both did when we tried a BB with a double bubble screen. With me wearing the HJC and her the Nitro her head does not weave with a std BB screen, so the aeroflow seems to stabilise the head/airflow.
The other reason for increased noise is that our ears do not fit in the ear recesses of the nitro, whereas with the HJC they seem to fit where they should. Regarding the bikes screen this plays a big part in air flow (obviously) and where it hits the helmet etc.
Refering to Jaws comments about try before you buy, could'nt agree more. However its nigh on impossible to try a helmet in riding conditions so you can never be sure a helmet is right or any good for the individual. And the conditions will change with the type of bike/screen.
Therefore using the ear out of the helmets ear recess as an example, any decibel readings taken from the ear position would be subject to how well the helmet fits this area.
So one of the important factors for wind noise may be, does your lug fit the lid. As we are all made so different, you really need to stick you finger up the side of the helmet to see if your ears fit fully into the recess correctly.
I tried on a shark lid the other day and the chin piece did not come down low enough to cover my chin.
Another item for wind noise is the fit of the 'neck' brace part of the lining, a tight fit here will also cut down wind noise. Obviously schuberth have a better idea what the standard head shape is and were the ears should be.........for most people....

I've bl4hbl4h bl4hbl4h bl4hbl4h enough, ....... yawn, yawn,

try before you buy, agreed!.......but it is a mine field, sizes are different, shapes are different, wind noise (which as you say) is difficult to test, etc etc.

luck and cashflow seem to be the best options!

Agree with that one, I think this is why most riders find a helmet that suits them and stick with that. Trouble is chap we all like to improve on what we had.

They all fit if you get a size too big.......
