Seized chain adjuster

I've read the previous threads on this problem. The right side adjuster is seized. I've taken the circlip and axle ring thingy off so now have a bolt poking out of the swing arm. I've sprayed WD40 on it for several days. Hit it on the end (hard) with a hammer and heated it. It is not moving at all. It's my wifes' bike so before I snap it and she says "you've broken my bike" have I missed any tricks? Changing the wife isn't an option. I've done it before and a new swing arm would be cheaper!!

Yep - hit it with a blow torch. I've only got WD40. Will look for others. Do we know for sure which release agent is best?
Thanks for the input

No point in heating the hammer bill :-0)

John will be the one to tell you Diver but at this moment in time I think he's at a wedding probably drinking dodgy spanish brandy and talking bolloxs under the influence. He will probably pop in tomorow.

I, however, was merely quoting. I should, of course, have used inverted commas so you are correct to take me to task. :bang: 8rfl@

Can't exactly get the image - but if you put a load of washers on the bolt and tighten it ?????

I seems it's the adjuster

Basically I have a steel bolt seized in an alloy swing arm. If I snap it my experience is that extractors don't work and I've never managed to drill down the centre of a bolt even if I grind it flat and use a centre punch. Looks like I might end up having to use one of those horrible universal adjusters or convert the present adjuster with a nut and bolt to act on the end of the swing arm. There's the problem of potential grief because I'm sure I'll be told it doesn't look so neat as it was!!!!! Won't force the bolt yet just in case someone has a miracle thought.

I have had this very problem on the bird. I eventually drilled it out as it had snapped flush with the swingarm. It may be worth removing the arm and taking it to a local engineering shop to remove as it can be a faff tbh.

Definitely a penetrating fluid if wd40 hasn't shifted it - Halfords sell small cans, apply liberally many times. If you haven't already tried it try tightening the bolt a tad - counter intuitive but it does work sometimes. Personally I would hesitate hitting with a hammer but then again it is not me that is at wits end:)-(:)-(
At the risk of stating the obvious use the correct sized (4mm?) spanner with six faces rather than the multi faced scanners/sockets that suffice for 99.9% of the time.

Get a bucket of hot water - as hot as you can get it - and immerse the whole area in it for a good while and then try tightening slightly.

Good luck.

Ps a second hand swing arm probably wouldn't cost a fortune if the worst comes to the worst.:dunno::dunno:

Have you thought about cutting a slot in the bolt head then using an impact driver?

swinging arm

I think heating with oxy gear is your best bet

Make some sort of 'well' around bolt (plastercine?) that will hold your preferred soaking fluid, diesel can be good, leave for as long as possible then as well as heating the swing arm,try freezing the bolt with can of shaken air duster. Good luck!!!

Will the alloy or whatever it is swing arm take that?

Probably not.

The old school trick is to wipe liquid soap on to the alloy - heat it with a blow torch until the soap burns - then it is as hot as you should go without heat treating the metal.

Thanks all. I've got a mole wrench on it and can actually see the bolt twist (ready to snap) with sod all happening where it goes into the swing arm. I've tried turning both ways - no joy. I'll try makin a well so it can soak and see if I can find some other penetrating stuff to try. I'll give it till the end of the week.
