Scottoiler

My Blackbird has been fitted with a scottoiler by the previous owner. I know what this does but never having had one before wondered how to refill it , Is it only scottoil you can use and how long / many miles does it last between refills. I have noticed a small tube tucked up near the rear number plate , is this where you squirt the oil in ?. I know this question may look a bit stupid to those who know but I'd rather be told how to refill it and when rather than risk fookin it upc7u8

very easy to do.connect your top up bottle to the pipe coming out of the scotoiler.make sure you put the dial at the top of oiler in prime position.u can now put the oil in.after that put on centre stand and start engine and put dial in number 4 position and check its lubing chain.i leave it in 4 for winter and 2 in summer.if i can do it anyone can.

forgot to say u must have the touring version if behind number plate.i use to get about 700 miles on mine depending on the setting i had it on

Ive had a quick look at the website, I am still non the wiser. I dont seem to have a large reservoir just a clear plastic vessel where the wires go in , about 4 inch long, seems to have some red fluid in it. Coming out of this is 2 tubes , One goes to the chain and the other goes to near the number plate , this tube is open ended as if you squirt oil down it now and again to fill the 4" vessel. I cant see the dial with different positions, although I've not looked properly, Has anyone got any pics of thiers so I can compare it to my set up so I can see if I've got any bits missing. Been and had a closer look, got a sticker near the top saying 'prime' and 'max' cant see different settings though.

One of the tubes that comes out of the reservoir (the clear cylinder) will have a black rubber rectangular "thingy" on the end, and this will be attached to the reservoir. This is the breather tube. Pull the black rubber "thingy" off the reservoir and refill. Push the black rubber "thingy" back on, and you're done. Scottoil is available all over the place, but some of the VFR guys have used chainsaw lube oil too. S'up to you, but I've never used anything else so I can't comment on how goo other stuff is.

Thanks for the tip. I shall get some oil first , someone else mentioned chainsaw oil is cheaper and easily available , I've even been told its not as messy. I will attempt to rifill it soon .

I don't understand the theory behind using chain saw oil in a Scotoiler. 500ml of Scot oil is ?4 and will last you 15-20,000 miles depending on how much wet weather riding you do. So why would you use something thats designed to lubricate a steel non O-ring chain on your ?120 O-ring bike chain? Just for the sake of a couple of quid.

Running a motrax electronic oiler on my bird. Point is the red fluid in your clear tube does not sound like chain oil but castrol GP motor oil, if thats the case I advise you clean chain with a proper chain cleaner. Cus if its engine oil it will fook your 'O' or X rings in the chain. Motrax chain lube is gear oil (least ways it smell like it), honda recommend gear oil, I run my motrax on gear oil, its sticky as sh*t and works well. (and its cheap) I use EP80. My motrax has and electronic timer fitted which I can adjust the flow rate (winter/summer). If anyone wants info on motrax please ask - also the motrax oiler (std) gives 800 to 1000 miles per fill... only snag Ive found the res is not clear, so you tend to keep it topped up.

I think Scotoil actually do a standard oil that is blue, and a high temp oil that is red, so it could be that.

Sorry if I've misled on that one, cheers for clearing that up,:bow: do you know if its gear oil dyed....

Red is thicker oil, and scotoiler actually reccomend it for the UK if you have a fast dribbler ... esp the dual injectors.. :yo:

Our Red Oil is for use in warmer climates and should be used in ambient temperatures of 20-40˚C. This makes it ideal for touring abroad. Because of its increased viscosity this oil is also better suited for use with older Scottoiler kits or with faster flowing oilers.

I've looked on the Scotoiler website, but they say that the touring kit isn't designed for the Blackbird... but it can be adjusted to fit?? ... Does anyone have a Touring Kit, and how easy is it to adjust the fit so it will go on a BB??

Cheers. And sorry if this sounds picky, but I had understood that the reservoir would go behind the numbr plate until reading on their site that it has to be adjusted to fit. So, is there much adjustment needed?

not as far as i'm aware. it fits snugly behind my number plate - though if you have a small/display (!) plate it may look a bit funny :eek:


mine was simply a case of removing number plate, fitting reservoir to number plate bracket, fitting number plate to reservoir.
