We had an Irish Setter (aka Red Setter) many moons ago, nice dog but rather nervous.

did I post this short video yesterday of Molly running with Bravo and Lima? In one of the back fields at my sister’s house.

We have always had rescues, a friend wanted a Dalmatian, he contacted a rescue centre, he was told he would have to pay up to £200 which I can understand but he was also told that the dog would always remain property of the rescue centre & they could reclaim it at any time, this is fine for protecting the dog but a local horse sanctuary (Albert) operate a similar system, Sarah’s friend took a Pony from them, paid £500, just over a week later they turned up & took the pony back, no explanation & no refund.
Our first rescue came from the Dogs Trust. There was a rehoming fee, as you'd expect, and there was a clause int he contract that said they could take the dog back. However, if memory serves, they could only take the dog back with good reason, like neglect.

No such caveats with Cardiff Dogs Home but prospective owners are subjected to greater scrutiny. We had to provide our car reg numbers, which allowed them to cross-reference car ownership (not necessary) with home ownership (yep) and that we lived where we said we did. They're council-run, so have access to data that normal charities might not.

Last dog I had was from a rescue centre. Despite the centre staff pushing Whippets & many different forms of Terrier, and after 4 visits, my dog, a border collie eventually chose me. She was lying in the corner of the kennel, pretty much ignoring everyone, including staff. I'd walked the length of the kennels to see what was available & passed her once. The staff said she was pretty friendly when she got to know you but was wary of strangers. On the way back to the reception, she stood up & came towards me. After some persuasion, the staff agreed to let me walk her, supervised) into their exercise field. When let off the lead she barely left my side.

She stayed that way when I was around for the 10 following years I had her, barely leaving my side when we were out.

Would have another dog but my elderly parents have an Airedale so should anything happen to them, he comes to me. As he doesn't get on well with other dogs (he has ADHD), it wouldn't be practical for me t take on another rescue at the moment.

When we were in Chelmsford we went to a rescue kennels in Waltham, (Suzy Quattro was a neighbour) it was a mansion & the old lass that owned it lived in one room, the rest of the place needed renovating, she used most of her land & money to rescue animals.
We went to the kennels & the old lady said “I’m going to let this dog out (Boxer) better pick up your Children as I don’t know what she’s like with kids” she unlocked the kennel & the dog ran to the table at the end & grabbed a lead in her mouth, brought it to me & sat down, I could not walk away without that dog, we had her for three years until she died of cancer, I was heartbroken as she was my dog, I didn’t choose her, she chose me.

My first choccy Lab was supposed to be my wife’s dog . When we went to the farm where the litter was she went off to talk to the owner. One little bundle of joy walked across to me and laid down on my foot and went to sleep - she was forever daddy’s girl much to my wife’s chagrin. I was selected.

The same was true when we got Meggy our Blue Merle Collie, she imprinted onto me and was always at my side.

Now we have miss Molly, and once again she’s ‘mine’ or rather I am ‘hers’

My first dog i chose by taking off a breeder then he chose to be my best pal for the rest of his life, he wanted to please and rarely left my side unless i was out on the bike or at work, never had a lead and never needed one, still miss him 30 odd years down the line

My last dog Bertie chose me, he was from my daughters dogs litter, he was the runt and was being pushed out so i knew he was coming with me at some point but when i sat on the floor and my daughter let them all out the other pups went every which way but he came to me, struggled onto my lap and promptly went to sleep, that sealed the deal without a doubt
Bertie is still with my ex and has a good life but i dont half miss him, he wont leave me alone when i visit and i wish i could bring him home but the council wont allow dogs in the flats :(

Same here with Twatbag, she is absolutely my dog. She loves Mrs P and she's very good with the overwhelming majority of people, but there's no doubt who she belongs to. Or, as has been said above, who belongs to her.

An update this evening from my sister - Bravo has been seen on the adoption website and will off to his new forever home at Easter. He’s going to someone my sister knows, and more importantly, approves of as an owner, as their own rescue Setter has passed away and he will help to fill the void. Success.
