Rehoming dogs

OK, not everyone’s cup of tea ie hate dogs, love cats (vermin) etc.etc. but maybe of interest to someone.

However, just in case anyone just happens to be inclined, my sister helps to run a rehoming charity called Settusfree which rehomes Setters that have been abandoned or whatever, and brought into this country from Romania in the main. All are healthy, vaccinated and neutered and come with a transit passport. Rather than having just pictures to view from - bear in mind there are many people who specifically want a Setter and not just an animal shelter dog - she, along with a few others around the country, foster a dog so that it can be seen in a home environment and viewed at home.

All 3 of her dogs are former rescues, 2 she initially has had for several years came with existing health issues and so she wouldn’t allow them to be adopted, she kept them for herself. The 3rd one Lima came a year ago, and made herself so much at home and bonded to Paul that they simply couldn’t allow her to go either.

Now she has Lima’s litter brother, Bravo, who came into the country from kennels abroad a fortnight ago, and he is to be fostered until he can be found a forever home. He settled in immediately and is fully house trained and enjoys people and other dogs. Perhaps he can remember his sister? He’s about 3 years old and full of energy. If anyone is at all interested please contact me for more details.

He’s the one with the white down his face. All the litter have good names, Alpha boy, Bravo boy, Delta girl, Lima girl, Zulu boy IMG_3786.jpegIMG_3804.jpeg

Last week we spent the better part of an hour trying to herd a Gordon Setter back into its garden after finding it cheerfully walking along the road without a care in the world.

The owner had left it out while at work (it has a fully furnished shed when she's at work) and he'd escaped because some twat had left the gate unlatched.

Feckin' thing was taking the piss something rotten and having a right laugh giving us the runaround.
Got the bastid animal back in the garden only for him to start howling like a wolf at us. Ungrateful git.

I do miss having a dog. One day.....

Rescuing dogs is so rewarding.

I don't understand why so many dogs have to be rescued from from outside the UK when the animal shelters here are bursting at the seams with unwanted pups. Ok, a lot of potential responsible owners are turned away from shelters on the basis that they're not suitable but that can't mean there's such a demand for Europups, can there?

I also wondered why she started it and apparently there are a lot of prospective owners for Setters - I wonder if the genetic diversity available abroad, despite these not being “pedigree’ helps - despite they are all always neutered before leaving where’ve they’re rescued from.

anyway - derek kelly and Cougar377 are you both possibles and want a link to the site?

We have always had rescues, a friend wanted a Dalmatian, he contacted a rescue centre, he was told he would have to pay up to £200 which I can understand but he was also told that the dog would always remain property of the rescue centre & they could reclaim it at any time, this is fine for protecting the dog but a local horse sanctuary (Albert) operate a similar system, Sarah’s friend took a Pony from them, paid £500, just over a week later they turned up & took the pony back, no explanation & no refund.

Sadly no room for any more dogs, trying to get Emma to get a companion for Dora but she’s still not over Alfie

Importing dogs from Romania seems to be the in thing, some friends of mine rehomed one (breed unknown) several years ago, it took quite a while before she settled down.

I agree, it is difficult when the dog is unknown. Which is exactly why my sister, and others like her, take them in as foster dogs so that they can be evaluated. Additionally, and of far greater importance - she evaluates any prospective owners and won’t let just anyone have them.

They aren’t “free” to a good home either, there is a rehoming fee that helps to cover transport and veterinary fees. That is several hundred pounds.

Our Labrador came from the Dogs Trust,
She is Labrador cross (with a sloth I think??)
And she became a therapy dog after a year or so with us …. As she aged, she prefers to relax at home and then her 4-5 mile daily walk
She truly is an absolute star, aged 12 now, we have had her 10 years …..
we are definitely dog people in our family now.

We're not in a position to take on a dog just yet, but punt me over the link anyway.

Yep mine has definitely got sloth DNA too. Unless it's dinner time. Or is it tea time. I've been on here too long...

Anybody thinking of getting a setter, you won’t be disappointed, English setters are lovely easy going dogs, Irish setters are a bit scatty but lots of fun, not had experience of Gordons though.
