For the first time in his career Valentino Rossi will not participate in his home GP at Mugello. A highside crash in the second practice session on Saturday morning at the Gran Premio d?Italia TIM has led to the Italian?s withdrawal from Sunday?s race, with the full period of time of his recovery yet to be determined.

The defending World Champion fell at Turn 13, the top of the fast chicane, as his M1 highsided and threw him from the bike. Rossi was stretchered from the track and taken directly to the medical centre, where he underwent X-rays which confirmed a displaced and exposed fracture of his right tibia.

Doctor Macchiagodena of the Clinica Mobile told motogp.com: ?It?s an injury more serious than we thought, because it?s an exposed fracture with the bone protruding from the skin. We have reduced the fracture, which fortunately has not affected any blood vessels or nerves.?

?It is serious, it could be a couple of months, but it is too early to say just yet. He remained calm, but having seen the images he could already see it was a nasty fall.?

Rossi was then flown by helicopter to the Careggi Hospital in Florence for a further medical examination, and was moved to the orthopaedic trauma centre afterwards, which is close to the hospital. He will have an operation this afternoon (Saturday).

Rossi?s absence on Sunday will be the first time he has missed a race since his debut in the 125cc class in Malaysia in 1996, breaking a record run of 230 successive GP starts.

So are Yamaha going to get a sub in for him? There's precious few starters on the grid as it is - all you will have to do is poodle round and finish to score points!

What are the options? Move Edwards up to Fiat Yam and get A.N. Other to partner Spies or vice versa?

And who would that be - Toseland, or maybe Crutchlow?

It's what Ducati did in effect last year when Stoner was out for some races.

I could be (probably am!) wrong, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Tose would do a lot better coming back with the benefit of hindsight, and actually having nothing to lose.

Yamaha have three races (including Mugello, I think) before their contract with Fiat requires a replacement. After that, who knows?

• Toseland never showed the potential that Spies has shown and he’s not been exactly spectacular, so far, in WSB
• Spies is contracted to Yamaha – not Tech Trois – so Yamaha have the last word on where his future lies. He could well be fave rave for Rossi's place
• Edwards is “Old School” and is, probably, more useful as a development rider to Yamaha than as a substitute for Rossi
• Rossi is out for the next six races, potentially; but apart from his status as a racing icon, he is also a marketing asset that is irreplaceable to Yamaha in the short term. Unfortunately, unable to race, he also becomes a financial liability
• Last, but not least; there’s the little matter of Georgie Lawrence, who must now be seen as the favourite to take the title: with, or without Rossi. His status and bargaining power with Yamaha will be enormously enhanced by Rossi’s absence, and his management team will do everything possible to take advantage of the potential for a significant shift of power. "Enforce the "three race rule" and I'll win the title!"

The King is dead (for a while).

LONG LIVE THE KING! :yo:

Apart from Le-Mans where JT binned it, Spies has not done any better at all to what JT did in his first year / 5 races .... :dunno:

He cant take Rossi's place, hes a rookie and rookies cannot have works rides ......d34l

He was pushing really hard as he couldnt get near Geoge's times when he binned it, I think a podium at best for Valli this weekend..

Championship is now a gimmie again this year :xm

Hate to see any of them get injured as they are all heroes ..Hell be getting better medical attention than the queen lol... hope he makes a quick recovery and gets back soon... Silvo will be even more boring now h1d1ng2
