I fancy some of that. Not met many of my motorcycling milestones recently.

If and when you get some concrete dates I can then make a deffinate dicision.

More than likely have Anya on the pillion perch, will that be an issue?

Mmmm.......I'm tempted, the only snag is that corrective surgery to my hips after the run may be expensive!

Landsend to John O'Groats......

I'm starting a new thread for the run from Landsend to John O'Groats and the starting point for the Four points challenge.
As this will be a closed thread for info only purposes all replys, comments suggestions etc should be posted here or alternatively PM me or mail me here Skippy

Thread for Landsend to John O'Groats

Thread for Four Points Challenge

I am building a website for both runs so that every thing is under one roof. There will various stories of pain and misery to download as well as routes in various formats and links to sites of intrest and relevence.
with a bit of luck it will be up and running in a week or two after I get through my copy of Building a web site for Dummies :goofy: :}

Nice one on your new thread

http://www.superblackbird.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=58773#post58773

One question I have on the JOG run, will people train for it? Are you laying down certain conditions on peoples fitness because you dont just turn up ( I presume)and ride it or am I talking rubbish as usual? What I mean is if people are on the bike some 27 hours then presumably they would have to be sure they could rie for at least 15 hours? Just interested to know.

Great idea on the site for the respective routes

Interesting point Stuart

On the Rusty Nuts 1000 miles in under 24 hours events I've ridden in NZ, fitness is a fairly small factor factor. The most important one is mental toughness - can you hang in there when you really start to hurt, because hurt you will. You'll get apprehensive in the middle of the night when your body clock is trying to shut you down and half your brain is trying to tell you to pull out.

What got me interested in the challenge in the first place was the account of a guy who did the Rusty Nuts on a Suzuki TL 1000 R. He was in so much pain half way through that he was hallucinating and seeing horrible things in the road waiting to eat him! A 'bird won't be that bad, but it will still hurt. If you make it though, the pride is almost indescribable, and that's what it's all about. It isn't a pussy ride. :} :} :}

I'll get a couple of my long haul accounts put on the web soon. They were on a K100RS, but my next one on Oct 18th will be on the 'bird.

Cheers

Grey Wolf & Richard ..........it would be great if you could make it,
remember dates and routes are not firm yet so you are welcome to make suggestions on either.

Stuart I agree with Geoff that most of the battle will be fought in your head.
I've never done an organized event like the Rusty Nuts Grand Challenge and the like but over the years I have done some seriously heavy duty long haul runs many well over 1000 miles on the trot and I have found the most useful thing is to actually get out wherever possible and do some miles .....lots of them. I find that you learn a lot about yourself and your bike and after a while you will find that the pain threshold will increase as will your endurance Whilst a good level of physical fitness can never be a bad thing I've seen some cronic lounge lizards do really big miles and super fit athletic types fall apart at the seams after only a few hours riding.
I have also found that what you eat and drink makes a difference, it is important to keep your fluids well and truly up and try to avoid heaps of sugary caffiene laden junk.........they give an initial boost but that turns into a mind numbing downer when it wears off I tend to drink just unsweetened fruit juices and water and not to eat a great deal as there is nothing worse than a large meal digesting away to bring on a major fit of lethargy.
At the risk of opening a very large can of worms here some of my mates have found that giving up smoking has made a world of difference, having never been a smoker myself I couldnt really say but I'm sure that nicotine cravings cant be good for the concentration on such a gruelling event as this.
I think Geoff has mentioned this somewhere and I totaly agree keep your stops short and sweet as you will find that your body will cramp up and the aches and pains will take over then the concentration starts to wander not a good thing.

All the above is from a personal view point and works for me at the end of the day experience is the thing that will show what works for you. One thing is for sure no matter how experienced and hardened you are it is going to hurt ...........and really bad, it then that you realize it isnt a race against the clock or the other riders but a personal challenge against yourself.
I hope this helps in some way I will be posting heaps of articles and useful stuff once the website gets of the ground so keep an eye on the threads.
Cheers for the link mate I will be having a close look at some those roads.

Rusty Nuts Ride

Stuart

If the attachment posts ok (~980k's), this is the first 1000 miler which I did. The weather was unbelievably bad, and we did all the wrong things - stopping for good breaks, and loading up with sugar and caffeine drinks, which Skip quite correctly says should be avoided at all costs.

This article is in Adobe format, but I hope to get some more properly posted through Clive and Jaws.

Thanks Geoff great read and some questions

Geoff, Skippy some questions if I may

First off a great article Geoff I really enjoyed reading it but some questions if I may which link in with what Skippy has indicated above

In the article you mention that it was '4.30 and still some 600k to go' and Skippy implies it's necessaary to get good miles in before the event so my question is given that say an average motorcyclists ride out of a week-end will say be in the region of 200k is that really enough? Would it not be necessary to do at least say 500 in one stretch before you tackle some thing like this?

Another question Geoff and beware its coming from complete ignorance on my part; On the Papara section did you structure the riders in a sort of formation so that those with brighter lights were sort of pathfinders?

You also mentioned Halogen lights what sort of mods would you suggest in doing thsi ride to a bike---just to let you know were linking up with them part of the way to Scotland but were puttin g in some serious miles in our trip to Scotland so any tips would help here

You also mentioned sugar content--I know from cycling that taking quick fix fizzy drinks is a disaster it gives you an immediate lift and then dumps you further down, same with sweets--I usually eat bannas and dried fruit which release a natural sugar called ' Fructose' I think it is which keeps blood sugar up, just my experience

Thanks Geoff if you can answer those questions and from what I can see you guys looked in pretty good physical shape as well
