Bill, that was an entirely different monkey !!!I think the fort was built in the time of Napoleon, John. He was on his way there but was shipwrecked and hanged in Sunderland or Hartlepool.

The construction of the Shannonbridge fort was interesting. The walls were battered so to deflect cannonball and the roof was built up with clay to absorb impact of cannonball.
The wall on right in aerial pic is breached by the road.
There was a smaller gun emplacement on the other side and I think on the island. The house on left was the commanders.
It's a restaurant now.
