Williamite War? 1689 to 1691. Do they mean King Billy? 1690 was the Battle of the Boyne! Should have built the fort by the banks of the Boyne! Not down in the back of beyond. :p

So is the feeling growing that ROI would be better off joining UK now rather than waiting for the EU to collapse? No border problem to worry about. :D

Not that I've heard but I heard a genuine concern that when a border post goes up that guns would reappear in protest.
You may not be aware but there are still finds of stuff by gardai.

This is my favourite fortified town - Lucca in Tuscany. I could sit in the central area and watch the world go by for weeks on end. Almost traffic free as well!!

Apprently the reason for the radial street design is that you can place cannon in the centre and fire down the streets to prevent attackers gaining ground should they breech the walls.

Didn't know that. Also provides an incredibly social area right in the middle. Lucca is beautiful, well worth a visit if in Tuscany.

Talking of forts I see Frances Fitzgerald has fallen onto her sword to save the coalition.

Another curious fact about forts - albeit one I am not 100%!convinced on - is that spiral staircases go clockwise when entering from the bottom, the reason being that attackers would have to hold their weapons in their left hand while the defender would have the adavantage of holding their weapon in their 'right' hand.

Which makes sense if everyone is right handed.
