Do you tip?

There' a little publicised act being introduced in July, which I think is not a bad idea. The Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act stops businesses withholding tips from staff, so that any tip, be it a percentage added to the bottom of your bill, or cash left on the table, all goes to staff.

Except...

The act hasn't even come in to effect yet & some businesses have already got a work around.

I always tip in cash, given to the person who has earned it. Up to them if they Chuck it in a pot for sharing.

Same here. I hate putting into the kitty when only one person has served us.

Always seemed very unfair that HMRC taxes certain folks based on what they assume they get in tips.
The effect is that if they don't get amount in tips then they lose money!

If you only want to tip the person who serves you, what about the person who cooked the (hopefully) good food and the lad/lass who washes up after you?

Unless it's changed, any business where those are paid should have a Tronc Master. They are responsible for collecting all tips, calculating tax and distributing any balance fairly amongst the staff whether front of house or kitchen.

Sadly very few businesses do this and a lot use tips to make up staff wages to minimum pay. Anything left is essentially pocketed by the bosses.

I never understand why people who work in hospitality get a tip, but people don't think to tip a shop worker :nusenuse: we help customers take goods to their car

When I worked in a kitchen, all tips went to waiting staff. None came in the kitchen.

So by that logic I might as well tip the farmer too then.

Another reason I detest going to America. Tip culture there is seriously out of hand, every twat and his dog wants a tip for everything.

All joking aside, I honestly cannot recall home many times I've been to America. It's well over 100 times and that's about as close as I can get. Whilst I like the place, the tip culture is bonkers. Mrs P was in San Francisco a few months back. She went into a burger place and ordered a burger to take out. It was $20, she pulled her card out and the machine asked for a 15, 20 or 25% tip. She asked the assistant what was going on here and it was compulsory and couldn't be over-ridden. In essence, she was supposed to pay at least $3 tip for an already over-priced, just for someone to pop it in a bag. She dropped a $20 bill on the counter and left. Personally, I'd have left without paying and without the burger.

Ok, $3 isn't much but it soon adds up over the course of a holiday. I refuse to tip unless I'm served to my own satisfaction
