At this stage I do need to mention that large group ride-outs do tend to knock the overall speed down a tad. Although we'll be operating a group ride system, with leader, sweeper and comms relay, this does not preclude anyone cutting loose and meeting up with the group at one of the later stops. So, if you do think the pace may be a bit slow for you, you fancy 'doing your own thing' and you know the route well enough then please let me know at the meet up or subsequent break stops so that we're not trying to account for you during the ride. If you don't know the route or are happy to get along at the group speed and enjoy being part of a big group of Birds then you don't need to say owt, but just tag along.
As we've quite a few 'virgin' attendees, I think it's worth outlining how the ride will work:
For those who are part of the group ride there's just a couple of simple things:
Do not pass the leader (me) 'cos you can guarantee that as soon as you have we'll turn off onto a different road!!! Then we have to stop the ride and send an outrider off to gather you back in.
The last bike will always be the sweeper (Quiney) - he won't let anybody get behind him! So, if the pace turns out to be too fast for comfort then just ride at a pace that you're happy with. The group won't vanish into the distance and be gone forever as the leader will be made aware of this and the ride re-grouped in time for any turns at junctions and the like. This explains why the leader will occasionally bimble along for a few minutes, or even pull up and wait. In this case, always pull in behind the leader - a spot will be chosen where there's enough room. So, if the group does go out of sight DON'T WORRY, just keep on the same road and you'll come across it in time for any direction changes.
As we have a comms relay (Stuey) we do have the luxury of letting the group get a bit stretched out on the faster sections. Please do not feel drawn into trying to keep up with the group if it's going at a pace that you're not happy with. Our over-riding concern is safety, yours and other road users.
Finally, if there's owt that's concerning you during the run then have a word with me or Quiney at a convenient point.
Once we've got the safety part sorted then we can concentrate on the next priority which is for everyone to have a great day.
Sounds great Clive, I'm running in so please pass.
