I don't think we get the Avons out here in South Africa. I've been running Dunlop 208's (not great), BS 020's and Michelin Road Pilots. I still only manage about 6000 kilometers on the rear (4000 miles). If there's anyone here who knows where or how to get Avons in South Africa, it would be good to know. I'm about due for new tyres again soon.

metz z6 with FREE brake pads

Just fitted metzeler z6 tyres after using bridgestone, what a difference !
The bike turns easier, feels smoother and grips in the wet like nothing Ive ever had before. In the dry they feel like a sports tyre not the touring tyre as they are described, as I just cant fault them in any way !
I cant comment on wear as Ive only done 1500 miles so far but they still look like new.
I could not believe the deal I got either, ?195 with a FREE pair of front brake pads ( Two Wheels, Edinburgh ) !
This is a deal offered by Metzeler nationaly, a free set of pads with a new PAIR purchased.

Highly recomended

BT45 is a bias tyre

BT-45

The Battlax BT-45 is a touring type tyre offered in both H and V rated speed symbols. Battlax BT-45 gives all-round street performance, with the emphasis on riding comfort, long mileage and wet performance, all of which are designed with Bridgestone's latest tyre developing technologies. With its comprehensive tyre sizes, Battlax BT-45 replace Battlax BT-35 and BT-17V.

TECHNICAL INDEX

Compound

The Battlax BT-45 rear tyre contains Dual Tread Compound (DTC). The centre compound secures long mileage and durability, while the tread edge compound secures grip and traction in corners. Also, Battlax BT-45 compound contains Silica for additional wet performance.

Pattern

The newly developed zigzag centre grooves promise high-speed stability. The smaller, directional grooves in the front tyre effectively remove water for wet performance.

Profile

Designed with CTDM, the unique sidewall profiles of Battlax BT-45 give high-speed stability and riding comfort with its cushion effect. The large crown radius also contributes to stability in high-speed touring.

I always thought the BT45's were only ever intended for the mid-range bikes anyway??

In my opinion there is only one tyre for the bird and it has to be the Avon Azaro ST45 & ST46 B rated they are top tyres giving excellent grip, high mileage, and at a good price what more do you need.

Avon ST 45/46

Pete formerly Blackbird Spares (big loss) recommended these to me and I now need a new pair after 6000 miles they are great but I am not qualified to say any more only that they only slip in the wet when I have a slow puncture. He just told me to make sure I get the AV ST 46 (B) which is a Bird specific one or a larger sport tourer one and this is denoted by the (B) stamped on the side wall.

Avons

we have just done a mass order for the massif,, 10 rears 5 fronts,, good price to,, can get about 6/7k from a rear(double from a front in most cases) two up with very little squaring off.
BS 020 will be square after 4k & the front 020 feathers off really quickly to.

B/bird specific Avons every time"B" prefix. :yo:

Tyres for blackbird

I am now on my third bird, currently own 2 of them and do high mileages. I have tryed most tyres. Bridgestone 020's are good but please please forget all other choices. Avon Viper Sports are outstanding. Head and shoulders above ALL other tyres on the market. Best directional stability and very good at high speed. Very very good lent over and allow last minute directional changes easily. They last tolerably well too and if you shop around can get a pair fitted and balanced for ?150 (well in Bradford anyway).
After 33 years riding I have never been more impressed by a pair of tyres. Better than some track day tyres. Fit them, you will be delighted.
I bought a spare pair of wheels from e-bay and fit bridgestone 020's for everyday use and change to the vipers for special occasions, european holidays etc.

Hi Grant, you've got me confused now - you said to forget all other choices and go for Avon Sports, but then go on to say that you yourself run 020's for everyday use :dunno:

Not many people can afford/be bothered to have a second set of wheels laying around with 'special occasion' tyres on, so most people require a tyre for all occasions. I'd agree that the Avon Vipers are indeed a very good tyre, but most people would recoil at the short lifespan of the rear tyre - a fast road rider will not see 3000 miles from the rear.

Again I'd agree that the 020 is a good allrounder, but IMHO the Avon ST is better. It gives just as much grip wet or dry (in fact I found the ST to cope even better under extreme speed/heat conditions) but you also have the added bonus that an ST will not square off as quickly as an 020, plus with the Avon you get the reassurance that if you are unlucky enough to get a puncture within (I think) the first mm of tread they'll replace the tyre F.O.C. (excluding fitting).

By the way, I ran BT57's initially, then 020's, then Avon ST's, then the Avon Sport, then the Avon Viper Sport on my 'Bird. I still run the Viper on my 'Blade where the lighter weight of the bike and the (very slightly) less power means I can get more mileage from it on this bike.

Horses for courses at the end of the day, but I think it's universally accepted that Macadams and Dunplops are crap when it comes to the mileage/grip equation b0x1

Hi guys - I've been reading the comments on the 020s and STs closely as my tyres are getting to the end of their life. Its confusing because if you look the opinion on the STs isn't universal. Are they good in the wet, or not? I ride in winter and this fundamental to me......

I used to think both Macadams and STs were not very good in the wet but really discovered it was me still braking into corners and gripping the handlebars too tight. Since sorting myself out I usually run STs (Macadams when on offer) and have no trouble in wet. As most people do I take it easy but on the few occasions I've had to tighten my line or pull up sharpish I've not had any trouble and think to myself "hey I could go quicker in the wet" but prefer to wait for the nice days to have fun.

Afraid you'll get as many opinions as there are double chins on here

I use 020's, am happy with 'em and don't plan changing any time soon. But that's just me. I'm happy with the dry performance and more than happy with the wet performance.

I personally feel that if I changed now I'd have to go through the whole "learning to trust" process with something new.

I feel that despite what you'lll read and folks say, at the end of the day it comes down to personal preference.

It's about how you ride and what suits that style and how you feel on the bike.:yo:

Both the 020's ( Bird type ) and the Avon ST's ( again Bird type ) are pretty good in the wet..
The deciding criteria for me is the fact that the Bridgestones square off very badly very quickly, while the Avons last twice as long and do not square off until they are on their last legs anyway !

Oh and although completely by accident ( long story ! ) I was using a pair of ST's the first time I got a knee down in the wet.. I would be the first to hold up my hands to woos riding in the rain normally.. :p !

Been using 020's on last 3 bikes... RT, V1000, Bird. The tyres are reliable, on the bird if you have not got them warm and try to push it (leaning) you get a skittish feeling through the bars as a pre-warning. During the bash run, which was slowish, the back twitched once (raining) but that tyre was knackered, actually neally illegal. However on the last run back to Swaffham from Fakenham I managed to do the high speed bendy bit and when I stopped the rear tyre was steaming, which proved it warms up in the wet.

And these were not bird specific 020's.

Tyre pressures I use

solo 39 front 39 rear/ 40psi in warm weather.
2 up 40psi all round
Full load 42psi.

CONTI ROAD ATTACKS

Hi all...this is not a commercial post,

I have been reselling bike tyres on ebay for a couple of months now and have a trade account with one of the biggest 2 distributors in the UK.
I picked up my "neglected" 98 carb bird last week and am slowly brining her back to life...part of this was new shoes so I asked the guys I trade with for their "honest" no bull advice on what they'd fit to a bird and the immediate answer was Conti Road Attacks for the best balance of performance and wear. Have been using these guys for a while now and they know they're stuff.
These are not dual compound as far as I know but I thought I'd give them a try as they look great! Will let you know how they went...in time. I've just swapped BMW K1200 RS for this bird and I know that BMW have just made the Conti's their OEM tyre for their big tourers.

best

Dave
