Couple of weekends ago I went to the Copdock rally with a few folk on R11xx GS boxers and another Bird rider.. Other Bird rider is very competent and was on 020's..
But,, there was one of the guys on his old boxer who was running rings round both of us on the birds ( and a Pan I think .. seem to remember him saying he rides the same bike but in white livery all week :p )..
Anyways, it was not raining but the roads were very wet.. neither the other bird rider or myself had any 'moments' .. it was simply the boxer rider was supremely confident in his wet weather riding ability !
What tyres was he on ? Some weird Tyong Shon ( or similar ) copy of trail wings.. cheap and nasty but he was as happy as larry with them !
So what does that say ? Perhaps if I shout and use caps lock and repeat it several times everyone will rush off and buy Tyong Shon tyres ? Who knows ! LOL !!!

Interesting comments Rhino

On the Matlock run i left Madhouse28 & Murt in the rain but i think this was purely down to knowing where i was going and the fact that i couldn't care less by that point.

Interesting this, because when I raised a thread on being nervous in the wet from having a BT57 front and an 020 on the back most of the replies put it down to my being "not up to speed", "rear wheel alignment" and a few others that escape me right now, and I can't be bothered to go back into that thread. I still have this combination and I still don't feel confident in the wet with this set up. This thread has now made thing even worse for me at tyre change time.

Personally, I have come to the conclusion that I have nothing to prove in the wet. So I ride slower. I think that riding with "quicker" riders than myself, especially in the wet tends to make oneself feel maybe "not as competant". But after all the comments and differances of opinion I think when it rains I will just...............................

Ride a bit slower than normal. :}

Come down where? My crystal ball is in for service.

Tima allowing, I could pop over. It would make a change to see a 'bird with L plates on :} Maybe it's the colour? Try some blue tyres as the fast black ones may not be compatible with your slow blue bike :dunno:

Southwest and mid wales m8 where men are men,and the sheep are georgeous. If wer'e too far you can stay over I'll even get you fixed up with a nice big fluffy one to keep you warm at night.

I would be really greatfull to have someone with your confidence and ability to come over and show me how to ride in the wet on avons.

Er slow blu me don't think so cos it's really a fast black one been painted blu just to fool certain tsars into thinking it's slow

I respect your comments fully, however some of us ARE experiencing problems in the wet and this cannot be denied or brushed aside.
I am aware of your experience in the motorcycle world and value your expert opinion on many things, i for one have had assistance from you, but how do you explain the sudden influx of people saying the same thing :dunno: .

I can say that the 010's never once caused me any concern and i pushed that machine to the best of my abilities on several occasions so until i can ride quicker than the 010's will allow me to then that will be my choice.

Thanks for your input Pete.

Rhino, do you still have your "iffy" Tyres ?? if so could I have them ??

I have sold hundreds of sets of Avon's now and I have been with Avon for 4 main bike shows and stood there listening to all the comments passed buy people coming onto the stand and I must admit by and large the wet weather feedback has been excellent!

Avon got very burnt a few years back when they made a tyre called the AV35, some of you may remember it, now this tyre was genuinely lethal in the wet and it got Avon a very bad name, a lot of people had some very dodgy moments on them. This tyre done so much damage to Avon's reputation that they really had to put some special effort into getting the AV45/46 right.

Now 99.9% of the people I have sold tyres to seem to agree, they did not do a bad job.

If your tyres are as bad as you say or Blu's, if I can have them back I would like to try them myself and I will also get Avon to test them, if there is a compound fault or a bad batch out there I would like to know.

Please bare a few other things in mind, that it is always very easy to blame the tyre when there are so many other variables that it could be, and if a tyre does let go in the wet, it usually does not come back. Plus a tyre can slip due to poor set-up, poor throttle control, fuel detergent build op on the road, diesel on the road from weeks before (not visible), over banding, white lines, polished aggregate, horse shit, road kill, gravel etc, etc, all of which are harder to spot in the wet.

As I said before I do not dispute the fact that you are having problems with your particular set of tyres, so lets see if we can sort it out before you put people off trying what hundreds of us feel is a very good competent all-round tyre.

Ummm interesting

Wouldn't you say Watson
Met Gatso down the Derby tother week and we had all arrived through a wet
weather ride. Gats asks me if I had a lot of slides from the rear on me journey mainly acceleration spins. Not me I replied and Gats had a confidence loss about his Avons. Rode home that night wet in parts and wet the last 20 odd miles. Cleaned the bike next day and looking at the rear wheel could see how far the bike had been over due to chicken strips blah blah, thought to me self was not that long ago on other tyres I had that size chicken strips in the dry. Got to be some bad batch Avons out there some numpty at the Avon factory is letting his hair gel drip in the mix on a few batches, got to be!!

Back this claim up Bert......... why am i lacking experience in my TENDER years as you put it... What experience am i lacking, please explain.

Could it be the 2 rider skills days i missed........mmmmmmmmmm maybe.
Could it be the off roading you took part in...........mmmmmmmm maybe.
Could it be the experience of dropping it on gravel......mmmmmmm maybe.
or could it be the fact i've done over 12,000 miles on the bird this year alone.......mmmmmmmmm NO!

Never ridden in the rain me....

Errr at the ripe old age of 34 exactely how much riding experience HAVE you got - and at what level?

You missed the THREE track days [not two] therefore you learned fook all cos you didn't attend any of them - I learned lots [in wet and dry] and because of that I am now a quicker and safer rider

Off roading? - Yep - I often overcook speed in corners and end up grass tracking - it's called "pushing the envelope" - you never been grasstracking? You aint trying that hard then - therefore your entire arguement is null and void [wet or dry] - happened 4 times this year - never dropped it once

Dropping it on gravel - yep - and thank you for helping me to lift the bike
In fact I've done this three times now [careless I know] - but I'm not perfect and I don't live in Manchester - God help you IF you ever suffer the same problem cos I'll make sure you never live it down LOL

12K miles this year alone? So what????
Typical pizza delivery boy will do three times that amount of miles on a fecking moped - doesn't make him a Riding God does it
Mileage is nothing - quality and safe riding in [wet or dry]

So your entire arguement RHINO is complete bollox

Wanna try again? LOL

Interesting to note that in wet conditions, typical MotoGP rider will be ave 2 secs per lap slower - wonder why?

Perhaps they could fit Avons and see if they could improve their lap times?

Hands up all those who ride slower in the wet?

It aint just me

So far we have
Blumeeni
CbrDave
Allan
Controlshed
Nigs
Wolfie
Minkey
Chuck
Gatso
and Myself, all experiencing wet weather traction problems :dunno: ,, i'd say there was a slight problem with them.

Pete, why do you show your bike on the AVON stand???? :dunno: , you cannot use their stand and not have loyalties to them :t
As for having my old tyres,, what exactly are you gonna do with them? what are these technical tests gonna involve? As i stated previously i have no problem in the dry,, very good infact,, i was looking at fitting B/stone for wet weather on my spare rims until next summer. They may work fine on the New Forest contamination free road surfaces.
I shall see what i can come up with regarding getting them to you.

RHINO~~~

But I thought your bike was "under wraps" and up for sale because you couldn't handle the power of the BIRD?

So why all the fuss?

Your a knob, 12,000 miles on a bike is good miles.. sitting at home racking up the years and not using it does not give you experience..
I learnt on a 1000cc bike, my very first one so i had to learn quick.
I have ridden with IAM, Police and MAC riders, i don't need to go on about track days.
How much 1 to 1 tuition did you get on your track day :dunno: from what i heard it was a concern about the first organised one that it was free for all :dunno: .
I rode a YZ490 moto X bike on a proper track for 2 years so i think i can handle a slippery surface so yes i have been off road.
I did'nt help you pick your bike up because
1) I parked mine on the tarmac carpark not the gravel one.
2) I set off before you and had my back to you.
3) By the time i knew there was a problem it was all over.
4) Coz i aint bending down near you!!!! :f

Yeh i've only been riding on the road for coming upto 6 yrs but i have covered over 50,000 miles through all seasons.
I do slow down in the wet however the tyres i have fitted let go where my old ones would not, my comments are valid, when someone puts a thread up asking for feedback i will give it but your getting involved in something you personally have no first hand experience in and then have the nerve to try and be-little me and bring my age into it......big deal..

I think that two folk here are

forgetting the reason for this thread.

This is turning into a slagging match and regardless of how entertaining it is, this is an important issue that needs to be taken seriously.

All of you who have issues with your Avons should take Pete up on the offer of having them examined and tested. If your complaints and concerns are that bad then that is the least you should do.

If you don't take him up on this offer then obviously its a case of you can't be bothered or you are blowing hot air, or you are not that concerned for your saftey or anyone elses.

If it is a bad batch then it needs to be investigated. So all of you who are complaining about them put your actions where your mouths are and stop slagging each other off with all this 'I am more experienced than you' bullshit.

It may be entertainment to all who are not involved with a concern with their tyres, but this is a serious matter.

So get your tyres off your bikes and get them couriered to Pete. Will even reccommend a courier....... www.parcel2go.com which will cost you around ?11.00

This is def starting to look more and more as if there is a bad ( very bad ! ) batch of tyres out there folks.

The fact that some of us are singing praises on high and others are diametrically opposed points to something being amiss.
Sure, everyone will have their own ideas of whats good or bad but to have COMPLETELY different thoughts on the same product is indicative of an issue.

I am with BIF on this guys.. In fact I bet that if Avon were contacted about it they would happily pay to have the tyres shipped to them for testing.
You never know, they may even offer replacements while the others are being tested !
