Just a quickie in line with the recent shooting events; lets have a show of hands who thinks the old bill should now be permanently armed.

If so, why?

If not so, why?

I think there is a need too - but no, it can't happen yet.

I say this because there are too many very young coppers out there who are simply not mature enough for that sort of responsibility.

I think there is a good case though for relevant arms training beyond a certain age, and after a pre-determined length of service in the force, when they have developed the necessary street craft and interpublic skills and are better equiped to read difficult situations and not react prematurely.

Having said that, I'm not sure if the two recent officers would not have been shot if they had been armed.

No no no...

I shudder to think of ALL police having guns

There are some of us.... er I mean er..them . on this site that don't quite have the mental stability to carry one all the time ( or the eyesight ). g0nn3

If it was part of the entrance test to have the psyicometric tests from the beginning of service... ok.

Now TAZER.. that's a different matter.

' What did you call me?... Zzzz. ouch gurgle, gibber.. sorry mister'..

Thats what I want :shooter:

Tazer..........Mmmmm.......

Oh, sorry..... Mind was wandering.

Yep, they will give a blast through thick clothing. Or you can just press it against the person without firing it and give them a little friendly reminder of who's the daddy.

See why they wouldn't give me a gun h1d1ng2

With all the grief that the cops who shot that Brazilian on the train got, and others in similar situations, I don't think it would make that much differece because many would be too scared of the consequences to actually use a weapon. I know a lot of the troops in the Gulf are thinking twice before even making their weapons ready.

Empress Blair :bandit: would have a field day defending the poor defenceless crims who had had their human rights infringed.

It takes a certain kind of person to keep a clear head when faced with the decision of whether to shoot to kill, not all Police Officers have that ability & that is by no means a derogatory remark, most of the Police do not want to be armed.

Too many do gooders in this country would be screaming from the roof tops if you armed the police. If they shot someone they would be hung out to dry and be nade an example of. I am surprised any of them still want to carry at all.

In the prison service staff were being suspended because some scroat without any witnesses or injuries made an allegation. Imagine what will happen if someone gets shot.........................

it's hard call.... but given that most of the current police force did'nt reckon on being armed when they joined it would need to be gradual. No poinjt given a weapon to someone who doesn't want it.......

Best bit of advice: "never ever point the weapon directly at anyone......unless of course you want to kill them"........

Don't forget though that long before the 60's in N. Ireland the police were already armed there as standard.

The worrying thing about the recent higlighted cases is that both it's WPC's probationers????

Certainly not.

It just ups the stakes.
The courts need to be tougher on gun crime and crime in general.

Sorry the fact they were WPC probationers means nowt. Both male and female officers are paid the same.

The point I think you were trying to say was they are probationers. One of my friends who was in the prison service with me has joined the Met. Within 5 weeks he was patrolling alone due to a lack of supervisors. Like has been said 'green' to the possible situations.

Are we surprised? it is all about number crunching & saving money, the Prison service is currently being flooded with new staff, here at Wakefield [a maximum security establishment] we have about 50% of staff with less than two years service, The government don't care about the safety aspect as long as they can say "We are staffing the jails". We have heard a whisper that they want 50% of Prison staff to be femails because they are more likely to leave the service within a couple of years thereby saving the Prison service on pensions, they don't realise that they are going to be spending a fortune in compensation after serious assaults & hostage situations that believe me WILL happen as a result of inept cost saving exercises.

The day they rell me i'm armed and walking the streets is the day i hand in my warrant card!

I get in many situations where, if i was armed, i would have possibly drawn and neutralised the offender. The problem with arming the cops is that in this country the offenders know we are a soft touch and the courts offer no punishment. In America and across Europe when an armed cop tells someone to stop, they generally do!
In this country i feel we will be challenged to use the new found power by the scrotes as they know we won't even use the gas let alone a 9mm Glock.

Roxxo has it sewn up here..

Well as someone that does the job, I would'nt like all officers armed. Many of the comments on here are true, you find the same in all jobs, look around your workplace, there are the ones you know and trust, there are ones you would'nt let loose on the kettle. Besides that the training implications would be massive and costly. And as some have said, they would refuse to carry, it's not for everyone, it's very easy to read a paper or listen to a news report and then pass comment on what you thought should have happened, or what you imagined you would have done in a certain situation, different ballgame being there and having a split second to make a decision. And we are all aware of the aftermath and possible consequences.

Having said that................ sh1tehppns

And personally I think that even had the two officers been armed the result would have been the same. You are always at a disadvantage and playing catch up in those situations. Their partners though had they been armed may have had time to react after the initial shooting. Just my opinion. :dunno:
