just had a go of friends 07 zzr1400 and while it was very smooth and handled well it did not seem to have much midrange , had it in 4th at 3000rpm and opened the throttle quickly and there seemed to be a delay in the bike picking up , my friend did say he was having to use the gears a lot more than he would have thought on such a large capacity bike ,he had moved up from an 2000 busa but still. also the riding position was odd as you seem to be perched on top of the bike . so I think if I change the bird ,I will be better off going back to a busa than getting a zzr 1400 .

Was it broken? The one I test rode was blooming rapid at everything in everything, it was a later model though :dunno:

Clueless in most things
07 so probably one of the first batch and likely to still have the secondary butterflies in. Later ones had them removed from the factory and many owners of the earlier ones removed them and claimed it made a marked difference.

I agree it's a bit more sporty in handling and position but I never found that an issue at 6ft 3 and it toured most of Europe with distinction. Sold mine to raise some funds and bought another blackie with part of the money.

?2-2.5k there is no finer sports tourer than the bird. If my budget was ?4-4.5 I would probably buy another zz1400.

to be honest Tim did not notice it too much as was more interested in mate's complaint of lack of midrange and fair amount of traffic about and not wanting to rear end anyone , mate was following me on my blackbird .

Removing the secondary 'flies makes a hell of a difference. Trust me.

First impression up in the Borders recently was "eek  where's the fookin engine braking"...

Up there on the Bird it was "roll on, roll off, roll on, roll off"...on the ZZR it was "roll on...roll off........arghhhhh grab some fekkin brakes quick"

I'm sure it's a case of getting used to it...but to me it was a major difference and one I didn't like.

If it's engine braking you want, try a 1300 Pan. No, maybe not, it's a man's bike. h1d1ng2

Second what Noobie said, if it was a second version there is usually plenty of mid range!

Great bikes ZZR14s once set up, BB is more sporty ZZR more tourer, well almost, they both do both!@tu*
