Zumo sat nav

I'm looking for a new sat nav for the bike as my tomtom no longer charges from the bike. I'm looking to possibly buy the new zumo 660 but I have been told that all zumo models are unable to warn of the safety cameras unless a route has been preset. Can anybody who has a zumo 500/550/660 let me know if its possible or not. (to be warned of safety cameras when no route is programmed that is) Don't want to waste money on a sat nav that's not suitable for my needs

I've got a zumo 660, it does warn of fixed speed cameras but I can't say if it's only on pre-programmed routes, I've never really thought about it, although I'm fairly sure it just notifies you if you have the map showing but not on a planned route. Maybe I'll nip out and check tomorrow as I've got a camera just down the road.

I also have a Novus Rider speed camera detector http://www.novus-gps.co.uk/Novus_GPS_Rider.php

The novus has free updates for life (of the unit!!!!!) and seem to update their database quite frequently. Whereas the zumo has four updates per year. Therefore the novus is going to be more accurate and includes specs cameras that monitor average speeds on motorways. As these chop and change fairly frequently around roadworks the Novus is more likely to be more accurate, more often.

Neither of these units are capable of detecting mobile cameras that are in use although they both notify you when you are in a known mobile camera use zone.

Hope this helps.

I have Zumo's and they do warn of camera's both fixed and mobile, with or without a route being put in

If you are otherwise happy with the Tomtom the Touratech mounts have a good reputation for curing the problem - did with mine.

Not pretty but well made

www.pocketgpsworld.com database is excellent, and is updated weekly.

Shows camera's by type (ie. fixed, mobile, SPECS, temporary and traffic light) and displays the limit. Warns when you approach, and again if you are over the limit.

It works on my Zumo550 without a route being programmed in.

if you have a rider 2 and the mount is not charging do what i did and phone tomtom and get the unit and the mount sent back.
cost to post unit - free - tomtom send you a prepaid box
cost of repair free - did not cost me a thing
there is a know fault with with the mount and it has to do with the small pins on the mount they rust. when you send the unit and mount off remember to remove your memory card

Thanks guys for the info on the Garmin, I have for now fixed my TomTom. It was the pins which had corroded. Spoke with TomTom and they said as is no longer in warranty I would have to pay for repair or replacement.:wank:
So took it apart myself and cleaned the pins. I was going to be buying the Europe maps for my TomTom as well my safety camera subscription expires soon but I think I will put this money towards the new Zumo 660 instead.
